New to Forum and '50s era TV
Hello, my name is Al and I was reffered to this forum by Tim P., who shares my love and ownership of 1955 buicks. He posted photos of one of his other hobbies, restoring appliances and televisions. I have always wanted one of the early/mid 1950's televisions in good working order. I am located in Montgomery County, MD outside of Washington, DC. Anyone in my area in this hobby and selling an early to mid '50's restored television in good working order?
Thanks. -Al |
Darn, you had me until you said "good working order"! I don't think I have anything that quite qualifies, not right now at least. Welcome, though!

Welcome!
There are many collectors on the east coast (not me though) so I'd imagine you should be able to find a restored 50's set for sale. These sets often do need service every 6 months to 3 years when used as daily drivers so it may be a good idea to get some tube radios to practice repair on, and eventually work your way into TVs, if you don't have a willing tech near you to keep it going. Other pluses of learning electrical restoration include not having to locate a tech if and when you fall in love with some local unrestored set you happen upon, and there is an addictive feeling of joy/accomplishment when one succeeds at fixing a set one has put a lot of effort in to or when one successfully tracks down a tough bug. There is lots of good info, and good folks here. |
Hey, glad to see that you made it! :D

Hi Al, Welcome to the TV funhouse! There were so many more TV manufacturers in the 50's than later on.
If you live in suburban DC, stop by the Radio-TV museum in Bowie. www.radiohistory.org I would be happy to contribute to a classic appliances thread, maybe in off-topic forums, below. |
Start one up, and I'll be glad to chime in :)
I just picked up a 1938 General Electric refrigerator in really nice shape. Which reminds me, I have to get a door seal for that thing...... |
Excellent!!
