Weird looking Philco Safari

How come this Philco Safari looks so weird?

Is it MISSING a bunch of stuff on the top or something? I've never seen one of these in person yet, but either this is a strange model...or it's just maybe missing most of it's case on top.

Yeah, there looks to be a BUNCH of the top assembly gone off it...The fold-up part, which is gone off mine, too.

Yeah, missing it's top, seller fails to mention that little detail but then it looks like he just copied and pasted his entire description from someones Site.

He's NUTZ wantin' THAT MUCH for it, too. They're not THAT rare...

$400 even in pristine condition would be steep

THIS one has no description at all of THIS unit...and is quite obviously not complete. I just happened to see it while screwing around on ebay. I'd LOVE to have one of these, but I'm not likely to ever get one.

Keep watching, and be patient - I have seen several over the years that sold below $100.

A few years ago, I bought a fairly nice one at the flea market and the seller didn't even know it was a TV. I don't remember what I paid for it; but, it wasn't over $50. Ebay has become a breeding ground for nutjob sellers who think their junk is worth a fortune. There are a lot of things I want; but, I'm willing to be patient and wait for a good deal to come along.

..And now, to get anything but snow outta a Safari, you gotta have a Blonder-Tongue Agile Modulator...Bastardly FCC...Grrrrrrrrrrr....

AiboPet 12-03-2012 07:15 PM

Naw....if it gets channel 13, I'll have a SUPERB picture from it. I'm not gonna be in any hurry to find one. My flat is now to the point the "display" areas still look fun...and no sets are "stored" away.

I now have to be a bit more picky what I just pick up on a whim. I don't have space to just have sets in closets and stuff. I like to see and turn on these sets....so I'm slowing down just short of "crazy cat lady" of little TV sets. A Safari would be nice because if I'm not mistaken, it's the first transistorized portable (with actual batteries). I do have the first little Sony 301, which I would say is the first "micro" (relatively) that I know of.
