'91 Ford Ranger
... unwanted and unloved so I took it as a pet
... a gift , the family that have it to me wouldn't accept any money for it ... 24950 miles on the odometer ... the ever so meager 2.3 L I4 mated to an A4LD ... factory firestone tires still on the rims ... obviously new tires , caliper hoses and wheel cylinders rotted and so replaced , exhaust aft of the catalytic converter rotted and so replaced , new sending unit for temp gauge and had to bypass the anti-slosh pcb for the fuel gauge as it is NLA , and an A.C. recharge ... pics don't really show it , but it has significant sun damage / fading ,,, a shame really as the truck spent the first 18 or so years of its life garages then left to the ravages of the weather ... think I have ~ $1500 in parts labor and license into it ... gonna call it quits and use the beast as a daily driver |

Most of these I've seen thru the years have always worked for their living, rarely as somebody's "Playpretty"..

If you didn't mention the original tires being on it I'd have wondered if the odometer got rolled over in that time.

Forget about sun damage, is there any rust? If no then that's awesome, I believe small trucks are among the best vehicles one can own.. It's a shame they have been mostly discontinued. Efficient, able to haul a lot, good in winter, robust suspensions and tires, track well on gravel, on and on.

Nice score! A truck like that I'd probably just throw a tarp into whenever I want to do light-duty hauling.

I really should give it a high polish detail inside and out .
Needs new belts after 27 years as well as front shock absorbers and rear ones as well . It was a freebie, except for the license & title change , new tires , rotors pads wheel cylinders all around and new exhaust and ac recharge . I have just under $1500 in it so far . Build date of sept 1990 and sold new to friends of mine 12/15/1990 . It's a shame it was left outdoors the last 8 years , as it had sent its previous years garaged . Hell , even the bed is almost free of scratches . |
Its being left outside all that time is actually good in a way, at least I would consider it good. If I had an old car I really like in mint condition I would be hesitant to drive it regularly. One light scratch or stone chip would ruin my day.

The beast you have is one of the best small trucks ever built by a domestic automaker. It's built Ford Tough when Ford Tough meant something. And worth love, the nicest Ranger i've seen this age, most were beaten on and worked hard. Reliable as an old friend. Enjoy and cherish it, and please do some Truck Stuff from time to time with it. :tresbon:

When gas got above $3/gallon several guys I know went out & grabbed an old Ranger to use as a daily driver while their late model F150 or Silverado sat in the garage. Even since prices moderated they've all kept running their Rangers, every one of them. Must mean something.

Nice score and the price was reasonable!!! My 91 has close to 500K on the clock and it still runs like the proverbial clock. Only problem was a known problem... weak head bolts... had to yank the head for a head gasket water leak around 185K and cut the valves and put injectors in at that time, even though a valve job and injectors were not needed. It now leaks more oil than it uses, but still only loses a quart per 2500 miles. I religiously changed oil and greased it every 3-4K, changed trans and rear oil every 50K, and it still has the original front end except for the right lower ball joint. Bear in mind the timing belt needs to be changed right around 60K but it's a non interference motor so it just quits when the belt goes away.
To bad the later Rangers didn't drive or handle nearly as well as the older ones. Enjoy!!! Jim |
Talked w/a car salesman buddy & he allowed that for the vast majority of things people buy trucks for,a Ranger, Kadota, or an S-10 is really all you need. In MY case, that's certainly been the case.. The Mighty Valdez, IT gets "Tapped" quite a bit, but a lot of it has been vast overkill. I WILL admit that it rides a LOT better if you have7-8 people & half a tonne of crapola in it. There's a fella a street or 2 back of me, he has a Smart. I told him If it ever gets tired, he could turn it on its side, put it in the "Cargo" area, & he'd be All Set..Kinda funny, they ALL give me H3!! over it until they gotta use it for themselves, then all the wise-ass jokes cease.. Under normal usage, you MIGHT come close to taxing its capabilities once every 2 or 3 months....Maybe...

A 93 Ranger with a 3.0 V6 - top loader 5 speed with 4WD, my first new vehicle. Fine handling and braking, and QUIET on the highway too! 1993 Ranger was the Mazda-cloned re-design. What happened? the body-mount bushing brackets and suspension attachments were rusting and I spent 3 day once redoing all the brake lines. Had to cut, flare and bend all new lines. the pre-made ones at all the parts stores including the dealer, had the wrong thread for what was on MY truck.
The 1988-91 models seem to outlast the ones that came right after, at least locally....a rust issue hurt most mid-90s and on full size. |
