Philco Safari

A Safari I bought off the 'bay arrived today. Its in great cosmetic
condition. Since the seller showed a raster, I turned it on.

It works perfectly, with minor issues.

Issue 1) Some controls need DeOxit or contact cleaner.

Issue 2) The correct brightness setting is all the way down.
Presumably this is a slightly off resistor in the 280V divider chain.

For restorers or owners of these, are there pitfalls to servicing?

Any any specific caps that need replacing for safety?

I got a second safari in better shape than my first this weekend.

I've yet to work on either of mine, but I do have a partial parts chassis laying around if you need anything it has.

I have the service manual. PM me if you want it.

The ETF already has the service manual and the Sam's

I have two of these and for whatever reason, the seem to all work after all of this time. Like anything from around the late 50s, capacitors are likely to be bad. But they seem to be the exception to the "rule".

I also have a decent original one that works with no apparent servicing done. These were overbuilt and, like many early transistor radios, still work decent after all these years. Scratchy controls seem to be the only issue.

Hi All, I am restoring a Safari H2010L and it is going pretty well however, I'm only getting 4KV of high voltage to the picture tube. I've recapped the set and it works fairly well but I get substantial blooming when I adjust brightness. I suspect weak 5642 rectifiers but before I jump into that mess, can you offer any suggestions on how to best troubleshoot this problem?

Been a while since I looked at the schematic, but if it has a flyback derrived B+ boost rail check the voltage on that...If it is spot on then your HV rectifiers are suspect.

ESRC has 5642's for a buck each. :thmbsp:
