1937 NBC/RCA remote truck

This press photo from 1937 shows one of the two trucks in the remote setup. This is the pickup truck with iconoscope camera and parabolic microphone. The other truck had a transmitter of some kind (probably VHF at the time?) for the link to the studio or transmitter site (possibly the transmitter site on the Empire State Building?).

The building in the background has a sign reading 33 WEST [something] Street.
It looks like 51st to me, but I'm not sure. Nothing like it there today. The only other likely spot is 33 West 34th street, which would be a few buildings west of the Empire State Building.

The New York Historical Society lists a hotel that used to be at 33 West 51st Street, called the Rockefeller and then The Little Hotel.

I recall seeing the photo in an RCA Review.

1937 was an interesting time. The RCA high frequency acorn tube was introduced the year before. And RCA was exploring the 50 to 100MHz band (then called ultra high frequency).

I read that RCA was exploring 80 MHz to 100MHz for intercity relay. I suspect that the "microwave" at that time was around 100MHz.

Cheers

Terry
