Were there any CRT color portable tvs that had BTSC audio demodulating circuitry?
I've been looking at Sony portable and small tvs along with others and most only have a single speaker and the ones that seem to have two speakers seem to lack stereo.
I know even in the early 2000s a Sylvania branded 9 inch tv lacked stereo so even in 2002 a household television could lack stereo. |
The few small TVs I've seen with stereo decoding had speakers on either side of the screen in order to give them at least a *tiny* bit of discernible separation - 20" being about the smallest I've seen with real stereo.
Since most people wanted small CRTs to make them fit a small area, a 20" TV with side speakers would take up as much room as a 23" TV, so they were never all that popular. Now, regarding Sony, I can't recall a small CRT Sony with stereo. I do remember several RCA, Zenith, and Philips built TVs about 20" with actual stereo. John |
19" & 20" are the smallest I remember. Some smaller sets would do SAP.
Only small sets that may have had Stereo MTS would be TV -radio combos but I dont remember any. Zenith who patented MTS never built any under 20". Converters were available. They ran off the tuner IF output. 73 Zeno:smoke: LFOD ! |

Hi All. I was to modify my Sanyo TV boombox MTC50 with a MTS decoder from a old TV but never done it..
Probably the hold up was is to finding a decoder board small enough to fit into the cabinet.. |
The noise reduction system in BTSC (dbx) had a hefty patent license fee that would have been hard to justify in a low-cost portable.

I have a 13 inch Magnavox that is stereo. They also sold the same cabinet with the 2 speakers, but a mono chassis.

In "the old days", someone could have used a "FRED II" or similar stereo-TV sound decoder with even a five-inch-CRT set, I would think. I had spare decoders already as of the mid-1990s or so, but no place in my house where I wanted/needed to set up a TV set to use one.
