Nipper Dawg

My niece gave me this old Victor Nipper advertising sign many years ago.
The wood board it's mounted on has begun to split, but otherwise it's in pretty good shape.

Kewl !

Woof!

Electronic M 12-09-2016 08:13 PM

Wonder if it is splitting from low humidity drying out the wood?

Celt 12-09-2016 09:39 PM

Could be....but the humidity in the house isn't all that low. Hovers around 40% most of the time.

Here's my woof. I picked this up at some antique store about 20 years ago. No idea what it was originally intended for, and there's no manufacture or country of origin on it. I doubt that it's too old, but probably pre China.

That's purdymous....

After posting I googled RCA serving tray and found these are apparently fairly common, and the manufacture is in fact in very fine print on the back side of the rim. Sure enough it's made in NJ USA.

A lot of the Nipper products re-appeared in the 80s. At the distributor I worked at, we had trays, stuffed Nippers, ceramic Nippers in two sizes, and the salt and pepper shakers.

RCA re-initiated Nipper when they brought ProScan to the market - it was the future, and RCA marketed RCA as the "old standard".

We gave them away - buy 6 triplers, or a sleeve of 6JE6C's and you got the tray. Buy $100 or more and get your choice, stuffed or ceramic Nipper...

We also got the Nipper pocket protectors, but no one wanted one, so the boss popped for the plain RCA pocket protectors. I know of one that is still in use today...not mine....

I've got a round Nipper cookie tin.

I believe these guys are from that 80's promotion period. A local dealer gave me a set of three, of which the biggest was so large that his front legs finally gave out. Unfortunately he ended up going to the local doggie shelter. These two are also looking for a loving new home.

Nipper was brought back for the CED players that started coming out around 1982. If you google 'Nippers revenge', you can find the story about the CED market collapse and the ultimate death of RCA.

The really sad thing is the story that when RCA closed down, they were throwing out tons of stuff. Nipper was on the top of the heap. It was said that someone stole the original Nipper statue from the pile.
The main company became Victor apartments. It has the original victor tower clock.
