I sold this sylvania superset new in 1981 the guy i sold it to called and said he was cleaning out a storage building and wanted to know if i wanted a couple old tv's. i said sure i will get rid of them for you i didn't expect one of the old supersets that i sold him back in 1981 to be one of them. plugged it in turned it on and it still works the top of the cabinet is in bad shape i just may fix it. the chassis is e51-15.

That's so cool.

That's quite a story. It would be fitting to restore it to the condition it was in when you sold it.

If the construction of the cabinet is like that of my E48-2 that top is probably a thin piece of Masonite which is easily damaged by moisture. From the look of the top I'm almost 100% sure it is. In that case it's better to just cut a new piece, apply matching laminate and glue it in. I have to admit their construction is the worst I've seen but if the rest is solid it's worth a go.

Absolute end of the line for GTE?

my sister has the same set.been an everyday watcher since she bought new.never had a repair and the crt looks very good.almost like new.sad that gte bit the bullet.in their day, they made fine, fine sets rivaling zeniths of the era.

rcaman 11-03-2017 09:04 PM

Yes these sets had a lot better picture than zenith or rca. Deep rich colors

Very cool. Neat story. How did the guy know to contact you? Are you still in the TV business? I've heard others say that those Sylvania sets were really great. Here's the proof. 😉

Sylvania SuperSets had awesome pictures when new. CRT lived harder life, because they were driven very hard to get that picture. I like them in good order. But CRT life compromised on a SuperSet, which killed many.

Yup the dark-lite jug. Gave a stunning pix. REAL black blacks.
Probably the best pix at the time but only for a few yrs. Even
the 19" models went soft fast.....
