I found a web site that sells am transmitter kit for $34.95 or so. It has a range depending on ant. of 1/4 mile with an input for cd player to get the old shows on the best radios. It is hobbytron.com

That's a Ramsey AM-1. They are not noted for being any more than a toy. There are much better AM transmitters out there.

I have used that one and it worked well for me...

But what I use to keep it all vintage is a the Knight Kit shown in the pix...

Of course not up to the audio quality of newer ones...But it is "vintage"

Then of course there is the Range Master at almost 800 bucks...

I think I will stick with my little Knight Kit and let it make the :music::music::music:

I put an SSTRAN kit together for a friend, and we installed it this weekend. This sounds MUCH better than any other sub-100 dollar transmitter that I have heard, with good range (I can be about twenty yards from the house and still pick it up) and decent sound. Although I will admit it is weak on bass in the sound dept.

Bill Hamre over on ARF has kits for a 6LE8 based transmitter. I have built one and the quality is far better than the AM-1. think the total for mine (incl. shipping) was around $20.

I have the SSTran and it seems weak to me, but it's installed in a concrete basement. I had planned to build a 'better' antenna (which would actually not be a legal antenna...), a 20 ft. mast that would go up through the house walls and extend the signal a bit better.

Best one I ever annoyed my neighbors with back in '68 was the one in the late-50's Sylvania Transistor Hobby Circuits Manual (not the one from the mid-50's). Had a decent modulation level and no "chirp" off to one side of the carrier. Could also try the phono oscillator circuit from a Philco "Beam-O-Lite" console, or the "EXT MOD" input on any old tube signal generator!

But speaking of annoying the neighbors...I remember devices that you could buy and there were plans in all DIY electronics magazines (Anyone remember Radio TV Experimenter magazine) for a small tone modulated transmitter that you could tune to a TV channel (Back when almost all tv was over the air) and as described "interrupt" the picture.

Just yesterday, I tiried to work up the nerve to ask for a Senior Menu item at Denny's! Only been 55 for a month now. I used to ride my bike for 3-4 miles each way to the only drugstore I could find Radio-TV Experimenter at!

Hmmmm...Wonder if any of these would work w/an R-390A, EK-07, SP-600, HRO-50 ?!? (grin)

I have had hands on with R-390A and the National and Hammarlund but
never had any experience with the Rohde and Swartze.
