repairing 8-track tapes?

I was just listening to an 8-track I like: Elvis - That's the Way It Is, and the tape seems to have broken in two, and retracted all back inside the cartridge. Has anyone ever had any luck repairing these? Last time I took an 8-track apart I wound up breaking the case. It's no great loss, I think I also have this one on a 33 rpm record, but I'd like to repair the tape if I can.

You have to be careful taking it apart. If you open it, there needs to be at least
one splice with the metallic channel changer tape. Keep in mind the tape is
one length, and pulling on the supply side (center) the takeup side has to wind it
back.... Once it's apart it's easier to see how it works.... I bet wikipedia has it...

it takes a fair bit of patience...more than I have.
most 8 tracks have failed glue on the splice tape by now..
and if one comes apart in your player, good bet some of that goo got on the head, and the next tape you put in could get eaten if you don't clean the head first

I've repaired a lot of these, usually it's no big deal. The foil tape I use is the "Duck Tape" brand. Who knows how it compares to others, it's just the only brand I know of. Knowing a brand could make the stuff easier to find.

The tape might be very loose on the reel by now, just pull it taut if so and wind the extra length around the reel before installing the new splice. I've had a couple of tapes get tangled beyond hope because of this during transport.

The hardest part for me is OPENING THEM!!

Its hard as anything and usually the cartridge gets ruined so I have to tape it back together....

8 TRACKS ARE GOREGOUS BUT CAN BE A ROYAL PAIN ALSO!!

A VERY small straight edge can be your friend in opening the cart....Most come apart fine but there were a couple of brands that were not designed to be opened.

a single motor belt driven RTR can be great for when one unspools too far, or when the back side of the tape flips to the front.

Thank you buddy :)

Well like on the tape I got tonight it has kinda large tab holes and if you stick a knife or a flat screwdriver in and push the tab back,ITS SUPPOSED TO RELEASE!!

It didnt though and I almost lost another! (I wanted to put a new pad in it,it basically had none)

I ended up just cutting a pad into a small section and I super glued it in the center section where then head goes.....

She plays fine :)

Tape 2/3 "1950s rock and roll collection" (Now I have the whole collection on records (4) and 8 track (3)
