my new vintage coke machine
So I helped out at a church rummage sale, i get volunteered for it every year. This rusty late 50s or early 60s westinghouse coke bottle vending machine is sitting there. The top covered in tar and paint overspray allover it. They had it at 50 bucks and at 20 at the end of the day. Finally they asked me to try and toss it in the dumpster for them and i figured that maybe i could part it out, i cant stand trashing anything old, so i gave them 20 for it and drug it home.
I let it sit for 24 hours, blew off the motor and fan clean and plugged it in. It works! It seems to drop a coke for 35 cents. Its only mildly cold, so im sure it needs to be recharged. So.. im planning on sanding this girl down for a quick repaint and new decals. I dont really have the time for a real restoration, as its basically working now. Id just rather love to have an old coke machine in my shop. I'll get some pictures up soon, this is a new computer and wont allow my old camera to upload, for some reason. |
Kewl ! Some of those Bad Bois go for mucho dinero...

Nice find! Is it the kind with the vertical door where you can see the ends of the bottles?
I have a Vendo Coca-Cola machine from the late 1940s with that style door. |

Ive never had a fridge or freezer recharged, i wonder what its going to cost to have this done? but for 20 bucks, i figure i can afford to put some work into this. |
Very nice bud :)

I'm sure in a big town like Tacoma there's some sort of restaurant supply/maintenance place that can fix you right up....If you were in Knoxville, I'd send you to Leinart's, I used to use them all the time for our refrigeration needs.

I wonder if it uses R-12 or R-22...

Just a random thought. With more than a bit of work, it would make a classy way to keep your tubes cool!
I loved the video of the old boy who reworked his fridge to look like a massive transmitter. |
i ve 2 soda pop machines.a cavalier 64 with the glass door and a vendorlator square top pepsi unit also with the glass door.both are from the early 60s.these machines can be bought cheaply and are great projects

Any independent refrigerator repair guy can charge this up. Should not cost you much.

I was going to mention the ammonia...
I've seen more than a few units that used R-12. It was used in refrigerators in the early 1960's. Unfortunately, running an R-12 fridge on R-134 just doesent quite cut it. The drinks are fairly cool, but not really cold. I've only seen R-22 in HVAC systems, and thats why I own a 30 pound jug of it. I bought the jug for my own system which is now 20 years old, but I've never even had to crack it open for any reason. It still cools perfectly. |
Ironic thing is Chattanooga, TN was where Cavalier was. And the vending division of Seeburg as well. Dixie Narco was also nearby, in Cleveland, TN. Sandy G then was near a major vending manufacturing center.
