Mid '50's 17" Sparton
 

I recently got this 17" Sparton from a TV shop and it looks to be a better quality TV. Unfortunately, the model number is gone; but, the repairman was nice enough to indicate that it's in Sam's #232. The CRT is a Hytron tube with a 1960 date code; but, unfortunately, it's nearly dead and no amount of cooking or rejuvenation will help. I'm going to have to dig up the Sam's so that I can see exactly what type CRT this set uses and I'll then have to track down a CRT.

The CRT should be a 17BP4A......

This sams covers alot of models....

Probably a 17BP4. The set is about a 1952/53 model, not newer.
I never had much experience with them. They were built right across the lake from us, but not real popular.
I heard, they were great performers, when restored.

well boobtubeman its allmost time now ,maybe even tomorrow if were lucky you should have a package on your door step. cool looking sparton dieseljeep ,i have a similier one like that one havent gotten around to looking at it yet.

The sams i have covers models 5207, 5208, 5210, 5220, 5225, 5226, 5262, 5263, 5265, 5267, 5268, 5270, 5272, 5273......... Thats ALOT of spartans... hehehehe Its a 1952 set according to the manual....

That set is definately 1952. I have a similar table set with exactly the same chassis.
Mine was involved in a house fire, and, cabinet has bad dammage.
I had the chassis working once, but, I know,it will need more work.
The reception was good on rabit ears.
The picture tube is definately a 17BP4. I had to replace my original one.
An unusual set, and, I like it.

Chances are the CRT is the original one. In the late 50's, the CRT would be labeled CBS Hytron, if it was a replacement. :sigh:

They are beyond "great performers," they are amazing and very well built! I have one that is a bit older than this one that has never been restored and still produces a great picture and sound. I must say that in recent years it takes about five minutes for the width to spread out, but it takes me way more than five more minutes to get moving in the morning than it did just ten years ago! Obviously my set is ready for some caps, but I can't help but marvel at the fact that a 60 year old electronic gadget of any kind still performs decently, so as of yet I have not touched a thing.
