My small collection...

So I got around to taking a few pictures of my transistor radio collection... I do have one or two smaller models and another cassette and eight-track radio that are not pictured.

First picture, from left to right and top to bottom they are...
Panasonic RF-933
Panasonic RF-930
Hitachi KH-1130H
Realistic Patrolman SW-60 (12-779)
General Electric 7-2885F (Superradio II)
General Electric 3-5508A (Eight-track)

Second picture, Panasonic T-35 on top of Allied A-2515. I plan to use the 80s vintage Realistic speaker (a Minimus, I believe) with the Allied. The other Panasonic is a tube model. I was too lazy to move the boxes on top of it to get to the model number on the back. I like how both Panasonics have the Civil Defense symbols at 640 and 1240, and both have the Matsushita logo. I have never gotten the T-35 working but the tube radio worked fine when I put it away years ago. At this point I will want to check out the caps before turning it on. Someday I will take a crack at the T-35 and fix the broken dial string on the Allied.

LOL, yes, I got that when I was in high school (around '92 or '93). I like collecting interesting packaging and other ephemera. (Yeah, I know I'm a packrat!)

I stopped being so lazy and got the tube radio off the shelf. It is a Panasonic 730:

There was a discussion on that on the R-390A chatline...A woman who was an instructor in decontamination proceedures said that unless you broke open one of the meters, scraped the radium off the meter dials, ate it, or snorted it, you'd be fine. Several of mine have the original meters, I don't think ANY of 'em "Glow in the Dark" anymore...The whole "Meter Scare" business was basically pretty silly, a "Chicken Little" sort of deal...

Agree! I measured mine with an old Lionel* radiological survey meter and found less than 0.5 mR/h... which was less than the calibration source glued to the side of the counter! I am not worried. But if anybody has a concern about using a '390 they can send it to me and I can dispose of it in the proper manner. :D :D

The phosphor is pretty much dead on these meters but they still light up pretty good with UV... wonder if there enough room to place a small UV led inside the meter. :scratch2:

*yep, that Lionel they did make some Geiger counters during the "cold war" era!

Sandy G 04-10-2010 07:19 PM

I always wanted a Geiger counter to see if it would count "Me"...(grin) You would be surprised how many people there are who absolutely MURDER the pronunciation of "Geiger"...Geeger, Gayger, Googer, Jeejer..."IT'S "GUY-GUR", you freakin' aluminum-siding selling imbeciles !! No wonder you hafta earn your living sellin' shyte nobody wants ! You're a feckin' DOLT !!! Don't call back !"
