TV sets used in the Space Invaders Championships
Anyone know what brand and model was used for this competition?
|
Not me. Looks like wood-grain vinyl-clad metal cabinet 19 inch sets like everyone was making.
Thanks for the pic! |
These look like simulated woodgrain plastic sets. Just curious what brand and model. Old metal cabinets were made before this. Old sets like the Zenith Chromacolor II.

Back cover has that sort of "GE look" to me. Maybe an EC chassis set?

That's funny, I was thinking GE and Sanyo.
GE's of that era should have the little box with the schematic on the back side and I don't see any on these sets. They do look a little like the Sanyo;s that Sears sold back then. Wat year was this? I imagine the sets were new at the time, they could be some type of Monitor too. |
Apparently 1980.
Here's a bigger copy of the picture, it doesn't help much though. http://cdn.skipandgiggle.com/wp-cont...2015/12/16.jpg |
The first thing that came to mind for me is Goldstar
|
Are there other pictures of this event?
|
Unfortunately, this seems to be the only angle taken. Doing a search gives you several of these pics and there's a bit of history on it including the fact that the winner was a guy but is now a girl (becky burger)? Held by Atari in 1980 with over 10,000 participants.
|
I'd say the only hope is to get as clear of an image as you can of those manufacturing stickers on the back and cross reference with sets from that era.
Or ask someone who was there if they remember the name badges on the TV. |

Ok, emailed her via her website. Let's see if she remembers. Turns out, she's a game designer. Bards Tale III for example.

There are some more pictures accompanying an article about the event in the March 1981 issue of Creative Computing magazine. The PDF at archive.org shows pics with the TVs but is too low-res to do anything with. I am downloading the 2.1 GB comic book archive now to see if it includes decent images.

Those tvs are different from the others. These have space invaders sitting on them so it was probably a different part of the tournament. Regional, nationals, etc. I see now, Bill Heinemen is now Rebecca Heinemen. Hell of a track record as a game programmer. Still haven't heard from her as of yet.

She replies:
"I believe they were RCA Television sets. They acquired them locally for the tournament. However, that photo was of the New York Regional, which I was not a part of. I was the winner of the LOS ANGELES Regional, and then the New York Nationals (The Nationals only had five contestants) Becky |

Yes the chairs are different and the TVs are elevated compared with the other picture. I was able to download the .cbz which contained high-resolution TIFs. They do look like RCAs to me.
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/t...psyltfcq9i.jpg There was also a UPI article about the New York regionals (attached). That must go along with the first picture. |
Someone I know has a GE VIR 19" that from the back looks very similar. CRT in that set is probably down to air since there is white arcing between most of the gun elements bad enough to trigger the auto off safeties with the CRT socket plugged in...

Here are some Sears TVs from 1983. I know that would be too new but there were probably other models for sale in 1980 with the same cabinet style. These are plastic woodgrain cabinets. The Sanyo-made Sears TV sets with metal cabinets do not match the style in the picture; the corners at the top are not rounded.
I don't know if these plastic-cabinet sets were made by Sanyo or by some other OEM for Sears. I agree with Eric H that if these were late 70's-1980 GE, they would have the little box with the schematic hanging off the back. |
