While doing some X-mas shopping i find a color portable tv today.

while browsing at the G-will, i find a 1987 Realistic 16-108 5" color portable. it has the 10 d-cell holder. I get it home and surprise it works. Upon closer examination i see that it has a delta gun crt. ???!!! or at least the color dots are in a triad pattern. I thought delta gun/triad phosphor dots went out of style years before the 80's anyone know who made this for RS?

Alternate rows of shadow mask holes and therefore the phosphor dots can be offset in an in-line gun tube and give an appearance somewhat similar to the dots for a delta gun.

Was there a name for this type of system? just curious.

I don't think so. Just a detail of shadow mask design to make the color triads less obvious or reduce moire'. Very likely there was a patent on it.

some inline gun CRT computer monitors used the delta gun phosphor pattern until the end of the CRT (dots could resolve fine text better), and the first inline gun CRT used in the GE portacolor used the delta gun pattern. Part of the reason the first portacolors looked low rez is that they literally cut the center 10" out of shadow mask for a 20" CRT leaving the screen with a fraction of the dot triad count it ought to have had...

Check the model label for the country of origin. It looks like one of the Korean makes. :scratch2:

Most of these 5" sets were built by Gold Star, Orion or Samsung.
If the set has a FCC number go to FCC.gov & look it up. Will tell
you the OEM & OEM model number.

Early in line jugs except Sony used the dots or rectangles. RCA
built most of them in 13, 15, 17 & 19 inch. They were used in Maggies,
Admiral, Warwick & a few others. Sylvania also built early in lines
that were very good & were found in Sylvania, Philco & Sanyo.
Zenith built EFL in lines & went into almost all the line. Also sold
them to Panasonic & Gold Star for the better models. After that they
invented the FTM CRT that became the flat & square tube.

Well, a bit of a bummer this morning. After several hours of playing last night with a perfect picture. I turn it on this morning and now i have no vertical.:tears: I've opened up the case, checked the yoke and it is ok. The set says made in Taiwan ROC but upon examining the components are mostly made by Matsushita, the crt is a 150chb22, the vertical chip is a an5532 chip. I can't find a FCC number as such but there are 2 paper stickers with a serial number 4349 and a sticker that says 7A7. Nothing looks burnt inside i can turn it off and on and see a quickly decaying raster before it becomes a line. Par for the course from radio shack i quess. Kinda shocking that this set cost $320 back in 1988.

FCC number almost always on the back model sticker.
Cold joints at IC pins VERY common on most brands & IC styles
so check that 1st. Worse thing it could be is the jungle IC but they
almost never fail in the vert section. Pull the data sheet & check
voltages...

Alrighty! after spending the good most of a day pouring over chip pinouts from ic companies. I'd like to quote the caption from one of our VK member's avatar pic....... It's A Cap!
This set uses a AN5156K as it's "Jungle" chip which feeds a AN5532 vertical output chip. the fault was a 22mf cap that shorted and was feeding 2.7 volts DC along with the sawtooth signal. the cap read 273 ohms out of circuit. Yay! Thanks Zeno for the advice, I guess sometimes you use whatever parts of a schematic you can find if you can't find the real thing!
Oh by the way. Don't let a little 5" crt fool ya. I discharged it before pulling the tube out of the chassis. The sound of the discharge was ALOT louder than i ever would have imagined. Glad it didn't discharge into me!

I was amazed at some of the RS products! They actually were rather good performing.
I miss them for some of the things they handled.

a long time ago i stumbled upon a realistic stereo tube amplifier which was a saf-24d, a rebadged japanese amp that had a very good sound. this was way back in the day. Radioshack did import some really good stuff back in the day. The tv i found may have been built in Taiwan but was made from Matsushita, high quality parts. back in the 80's.

Electronic M 12-25-2018 12:31 PM

Radio Shack used to rebadge good stuff both foreign and domestic... Some of their tape decks were TEACs ...my X3R is the same as my realistic TR3000.

KentTeffeteller 12-25-2018 07:55 PM

Electronic M,

Unusually,. The Realistic TR 3000 was a Teac OEM original design for Radio Shack. The tape deck sold so well, that Teac decided to sell this design under their own brand as the Teac X-3 and X-3R. The only time I've seen the OEM private label item be the original item, and then sold by the company who made it as their own brand.
