newbie from indiana

I just discovered all the awesome old sets mainly via youtube and had to have one. I found an old admiral on craigslist and bought it yesterday. I cant wait to get it hooked up and in good working order. Although i know very little about electronics,my grandpa was a tv repair man in the 50's,60's and 70's so i'm sure he knows his way around my new set. plus his basement is still full of boxes of tubes and other parts.

Here's a picture of my admiral, any help dating it would be great.

Hi Jamie. Welcome to VK

I think that's an Admiral CA2246 from 1955. Check this out from http://www.tvhistory.tv The only difference I see is the cutout on the legs and maybe the knobs.

That 'antenna' is actually a UHF -> VHF converter. You'd set a VHF only TV to channel 4 or 5 and tune in channels 14-83 with that box.

Thanks for the info, the last owner said he thought it was a 48 but after researching them a bit i knew it was not that old. I probably wont be using the antenna but will leave t as decoration since i think it looks good with the set. I plan to hook a dvd player up to it and maybe tap into the cable feed off my regular tv and use it when i watch an old western or something. I may have a new addiction as I'm already looking for an older Bakelite admiral..haha.

I concur with Banderson.

Welcome!
That is one cool set! Please be careful plugging it in before redoing capacitors(don't), I'd hate to see you smoke it before your grampa even sees it. Good luck!
