How much are the Philco Bar Radios worth without glassware? There's a guy locally who's selling one in good condition.

They aren't cheap.

Well, I purchased the unit today, and turned out that the guy had the glassware sitting in a box and he didn't even know it. He included it in the sale though it's missing 5 of the glasses. It does have the ice tongs though which I believe are original to the set.

The cabinet needs refinishing, but is in pretty good condition otherwise. Two pieces of veneer need to be replaced on the upper doors as they've split and cracked. Otherwise it's got the original chassis and back to go with it.

I'm more giddy than a schoolboy, though this project will have to wait for warmer days before I start tearing into it

Well, I've begun working on the cabinet, stripping the damaged veneer and finally stripping the finish. The local wood store had a roll of walnut veneer that matches the original grain quite nicely and will be stained to match.

It's interesting, a few others who have done restorations on these units note that the veneer cracked on the doors in the exact same place. Not on the body, but on the doors at the top of the cabinet.

I've been debating how to refinish the cabinet, shellac was original, but doesn't hold up as well as some more modern finishes. Not to mention, shellac dissolves with alcohol. (Great for a bar right?)

My doors were not cracked. The proper finish is sprayed lacquer, but the prep work is everything.
