68 Zenith!

Our friend just got this awesome '68 Zenith TV/stereo, the TV part is all tube, works great too! We'd like to find the same type of thing: all tube, rectangle or roundie screen, but with no stereo, and smaller size up to 42"-ish? Early American style preferred or other maple or lighter wood cabinet style.
NY/PA location or possibility of shipping or delivery helpful, we're too old to travel far anymore. Information or leads would be much appreciated

There are a few things to fix on it as the remote control doesn't work and the UHF tuner dial is stuck inside the VHF dial.

Here's a small video of it.

The plastic indicator drums in there got distorted from using the wrong dial lamp. Some got distorted so bad that the teeth were ground off the bottom of the drum. :sigh:

Phil got the tuner out apart and sanded the interior of the tuning dial, so it moves freely now. It had the correct standard bulb so not sure what caused the problem. Wonder if some kind of lubrication be a good idea?

Leave it dry. Lube may help but it soon gets dirty ( these sets are dirt
magnets ). Also most of the Zeniths back then used a friction drive
for the UHF. They had a spring loaded fly wheel driven by a small
shaft. Had to often clean them with lighter fluid when they slipped.
The VHF indicator disc when used would distort from the wrong lamp.
IIRC they used a #159 or #259 lamp. Wish I could remember the
tuner assy on this one but being a remote didnt see that many.
Remote was a $100 + option back then !

Thanks Zeno, will pass that info on to Phil. In his case it evidently has the correct bulb, perhaps just sitting so long caused the problem, in any event he's making progress!

That combo is a beauty. Great looking picture on it. In high school I helped get those out of customer basements back to the shop. That was back when my knees were good and I had a strong back. It's amazing how combos got relegated to the basement as the second tv while the brand new one would be showcased in the living room. God I remember taking so many of these back to the shop in my day. Uff da.

Can't imagine carrying one of those beasts up and down basement stairs!

I miss the days when TVs were beautiful pieces of furniture and built to last.
