Tuner dead spots
 

My TG&Y (Sampo) TV's tuner has a few dead spots.

I don't have any time to fix this. Radiotvnut, since you're familiar with it, I'd hate to be a bother, would you be willing to fix it if I paid you and shipped it to you to repair? Just the tuner, the rest of the TV works fine. On some channels there's not even static, just a solid grey screen. Also, the UHF numbers don't rotate anymore, and I don't think the UHF fine control works either. The tuner seems REALLY crappy in it's build quality.

The tuner is dirty, clean all the contacts with Deoxit and don't spray it all over in there, sometimes it works better to spray some in a little cup and use a brush or Q tip. The numbers that are stuck probably just need a little lube as the old stuff can get sticky and gum up the gears. Same goes for the fine tuning, it can get gummed up.

Does it matter? nothing to tune these days.

Some channels are not on the right spot though either, like 3 is 2, or something like that.

There may not be much to tune, but I plan to get a few blonder tongues and have my own little channel selection in the house..

I don't have time to mess with the tuner, cause it not only seems dirty, it also seems to need some kind of alignment.

Its dirty.

I would like to know if there is anyone in the world left doing tuner alignments. Talk about specialized equipment.
Im pretty sure Im about the only one doing IF and chroma alignments on tube color sets. Im fairly comfortable with it but I wouldnt touch a tuner. The set would go to parts and I would find another set.
Looking at trade mags tuner rebuilding/exchange was big business at one time.

With some of those '80s tuners, a neighboring channel can easily be tuned in with the fine tuning, 3 can move to 4 ect. Clean it up, lube it and retune the fine tuning. I bet it'll work fine.

Fine tune wouldn't fix it, I tried.

I'll have to see if I can get the tuner apart.. I'm rather afraid of it.

A retired TV repair man told me that contact cleaner spray in the tuner will get call-backs, and to clean the contacts well with a pencil eraser for a more permanent fix. Usually you can get the contacts exposed just by removing the shield on the bottom of the tuner.
