This photo looks awful, but I had to share it: it is me with a 1948 British PYE TV set on the Imperial War Museum in London. I have never imagined that this TV was so small!!! Never saw one in person before, so I was really surprised:

That's the D16T, the first British TV manufactured after WW2. There's also the table model, the B16T. Identical electronics in a smaller cabinet. It used mains EHT but was otherwise a modern design with EF50 valves.

Overall a very good design capable of high quality pictures. Because they had a double wound mains transformer and grounded chassis they were also easy to convert to video monitors. The BBC used quite a few this way, notably in the 1948 London Olympics.

The attached photo shows 3x D16T used as monitors during the 1948 London Olympics. The vision engineer (to the right) has a professional monitor which looks wonderfully lethal with its covers removed.
