Glass warming/annealing torch

I finally was able to locate round ceramic honeycomb for making warming/annealing torches for the horizontal lathe, these form an infrared burner with very even and predictable heat to help avoid glass breakage. They are supplied with natural gas and shop air, so you can go from a red honeycomb for warming to a protruding blue flame for annealing. When completed, it will be nearly identical to what RACS had.

Nice

Just landed at Kniggits Inn (Monty Python reference), tomorrow is Sunday though so no machine shops will be available to help me make a holder for these. Plan right now is to spend the day unloading Cliff's truck, then get all the machinery up and running for verification of its status. Once that's done Monday will roll around, so I'll begin working on a practice B&W tube to brush up on my skills. While that's going on a local machine shop should be able to hammer out a nice torch body or two for me and if all goes well with that, it's game time with the 21AXP22.

Nick, not sure which 21AXP22 you have in mind, but as a reminder, mine was the one that had a leak at a small ding on the edge, found by necking it and testing with the helium detector, so not a good candidate. It's marked as mine on the flare.

Yours needs to be welded, I didn't bring my welder this year because there simply wasn't room with all the other stuff I was hauling. There's a guy down the street selling an E-150 van for $500 that needs transmission work, maybe I should repair it and use it as my Hillard vehicle? Anyway If you'd like me to attempt a repair on yours, I can take it back with me and use the TIG machine I have there. The tube I'm fixing presently will be the one from the Gilfilan prototype.

I would like mine to get fixed eventually, of course, but in no way do I want to impede progress and learning by using a defective tube to start!

Carry on!

It's not an imposition, it's just that I won't be able to leak check it or put a gun in it (assuming the leak was repaired) until next year at least. All I can do right now is TIG weld that area of the flange and bring it back next year, hoping I patched the hole.

Sounds like a plan to me.

miniman82 05-01-2017 05:20 PM

OK, if there's room in the car I'll take it back for some welding.
