TV swap meet in Milwaukee July 20, 2014

Please accept my apologies for crossposting this to several of the TV forums here. There doesn't seem to be any particular place here on VK to announce this where it will be seen by all the TV collectors.

The Wisconsin Antique Radio Club Inc. would like to invite all television collectors to our swap meet on July 20, 2014.

Many members of our club also have an interest in TVs and related items, and we are aware there is a large concentration of vintage TV collectors in the Wisconsin and Northern Illinois area. We would like to have them join us in a combined Radio & Television swap meet. We will urge our club members to bring their TV related items to this meet, and hope that the invited TV collectors that attend will bring their goodies up for sale or trade. There is really only one TV swap that I know of, the one at the Early Television Museum Convention in May. This will be a second opportunity for those who perhaps couldn't attend the ETF meet, or found it too far to travel with items to swap.

To make this a success (and perhaps an annual special event) we need you folks to bring your TV items along to sell at this meet. It won't be a success if everyone shows up to buy, and no one brings anything to sell. Also be aware that you should make sure you have room to haul home some of the items you may find here. Too often I've heard "I'd sure like to buy this, but it won't fit in the trunk of my car".

I myself will be bringing at least 15 televisions along to sell, along with many other TV items including empty Admiral Bakelite cabinets (console & table model) and various parts and test equipment.

Anyone interested, please post here and encourage others to attend. Carpool if you have to. We would be glad to see you here.

A little bit about our club and swap meets... Our meet is held right next to the Milwaukee Airport, very easy to find and access. You can find club info at http://www.warci.org and on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Wisco...33900503344505 . There is a nominal $10 selling fee at this swap to non-club members. The July meet is normally held outside with unlimited space for everyone. However if the weather is not cooperating with an outdoor event, there is only a limited amount of space indoors to set up, so watch the weather and hope for sunshine.

Any questions? Post them here, I'll be glad to respond.

@ first I thought this was spam seeing its posted on several bases but then I saw you posted it :)

I suppose posting this on the TV base would have been good also bud....... (Last one on the list)

Sounds like a good event coming!!!!!!

bandersen 05-02-2014 11:23 AM

Thanks for posting and I'll try to make it with some sets and stuff. I just might take those Admiral cabinets off your hands too :)

BTW I disagree about posting this in the 'Movies, Shows, & Programs' forum (base ?). Perhaps VK should add a forum for upcoming events.

Kevin Kuehn 05-02-2014 11:31 AM

Sounds like fun. What do you guys think about us posting up pictures of potential sale/swap items here? For me it's a really long haul and I'd be more motivated to load up the heavy items and venture out if I had a couple of items pre-sold, or at least a swap worked out. Just an idea.

bandersen 05-02-2014 11:37 AM

Good idea. I'll definitely post pics.

IsthmusTV 05-02-2014 12:48 PM

Sounds great. I'll definitely try to make it. Thanks for getting the word out, Jim!

May try to make it as well with some extra sets to sell.

dieseljeep 05-02-2014 03:23 PM

I expect to be there as well.
It'll be great to meet a few more of the VK members.

I'll try to remember to set up some name badges at the hospitality table so we can identify our ARF and VK alliances.

Dude111 05-03-2014 04:04 AM

Make sure to take pictures please Jim so we can all enjoy :)

WISCOJIM 05-03-2014 10:10 AM

We have two club photographers for our events, and we then place pictures in our newsletter, on our club web site, and on our Facebook page.

If I forget to post some here, please remind me.

A fellow collector and I were discussing the July 20, meet and was mentioning that he has an attic full of portable B/W sets.
I mentioned that they had to be vacuum tube based or hybrid. I have a few, that I'm bringing along as freebees.
Please respond, if there's going to be any interest in the items! :scratch2:
Thanks, DAVE.

Dave, I'm not sure anyone will be able to tell you in advance unless you share some pictures. I'll be putting up a bunch of pictures early in July. I'm now guessing I'll be bringing at least 30 sets along.

I hope we get some good participation, and that everyone brings along a big enough vehicle to haul stuff. I may be willing to do some deliveries if necessary.

And everyone, please keep spreading the word.

If any of you can think where else I should be posting about the meet, please let me know.

Jim

WISCOJIM 06-05-2014 01:35 PM

To encourage socializing amongst participants and to entice more people to stay to the end of our events, our club serves pizza as a snack near the end of our meets. These are the tasty thin crust pizzas that are served from the Landmark 1850 Inn and The Terminal banquet hall.

Historical note: The Landmark 1850 Inn is Milwaukee's oldest tavern.

Is this close to the milwaukee airport ?
I need to know, to book a hotel.

MAY bring a few things to sell, maybe a 21FJP22 (have to test it) , weak but usuable 16GP22, and maybe a few other tubes and such.

An important announcement from the club:

There will be no dumping TVs on the grounds where the meet is to be held. We need to leave the area clean when we leave. There will be no dumpster available to dump unwanted TVs or other items that don't sell. (By law they must be recycled, so placing them in a trash container wouldn't be allowable anyway.)

Also our WARCI club has featured a donation auction where sellers may drop off unwanted/unsold radio related items to be auctioned off to benefit the club, for which we are truly grateful. But past history shows that TV sets have been tough items to auction off, and club management is therefore concerned that unsold TVs may be dumped into the auction rather than taken back home with the sellers. To avoid this situation, TV sets will not be accepted in the July 20th donation auction.

So make sure you have room to bring back any unsold items with you. Although we'd really like for you all to bring TV sets along with you to make it worthwhile for TV collectors to attend, sets that are unlikely to sell should probably be left at home. What you can do with those sets is make your own lists with pictures and prices to distribute at the meet to interested buyers, as I will be doing with many of the extra sets I have in storage. Feel free to drop off copies of your lists at the hospitality table as well as handing them out around the meet.

Thank you.

Less than 10 days away!

Here's the first batch of TVs I brought back from the storage bin that I'll be bringing to the WARCI meet. I'll go back in a couple days and grab at least 20 more.

The rest of you that plan on coming and talked about posting pictures, let's see what you've got!

ZackN920 07-11-2014 11:04 PM

Man... Why can't this be closer! Thats a 3 hour drive for me and I would have to take my Suburban. I know for sure, I can't fit as many in my little Jeep! lol I would gladly take one of them Admirals from ya Jim. I even got a set I would like to sell/trade.

WISCOJIM 07-12-2014 08:40 AM

Come on up!

A 3-hour drive is actually very little. Many of us have done 1,000+ mile round trip drives just to pick up TVs and radios. You've got to go where they are, they don't always show up on your doorstep.

Besides the two Bakelite Admiral consoles I'm bringing, I know of another club member who has one for sale. He wasn't sure he'd be bringing it along because he'd have to drag it out of his basement, but if he doesn't, ask me and I'll point him out to you so you can talk with him.

I'll be up and on the road at 3AM to get there early to set up the club's hospitality table and donation auction area before I start to unload my van & trailer.

That's right everyone. I'll have a full Sienna minivan and a 12-foot long enclosed trailer full of goodies to bring down.

rca2000 07-12-2014 07:55 PM

I will be driving a LOT farther than 3 hrs and i am coming.

I DO wonder--is there any interest in my 21FJP22 tube? It seems good, and not any real cataracts I think. I will try and get a pix tomorror night of the face. I will NOT be needing it after all for that combo. It still has all of the neck hardware from the 24MC32 or so Zenith set it was in.

Also--is there anyone who might want my 16GP4 tube---it IS weak, but with a bit of help, say 7V or so on the fil--it comes up to decent emission and that IS a rare tube.

DO NOT really want to bring a bunch of CRTs that I have to drag all the way back home, after all.

If it tests good, and it's priced right, I'm interested.

Bill R 07-12-2014 08:45 PM

I could probably squeeze a 21FJP22 in the back seat of the corolla. I have a CTC12 RCA that could use it since the one in it has been necked.

DavGoodlin 07-12-2014 10:31 PM

This sounds like a well-thought out event.

The only big event here is the Delaware Valley Historic Radio Club swap meet in Kutztown (surrounded by farms) in May and Sept for the last 15+ years, but it gets lots of travelers from as afar away as VA and MA.
It is mostly a radio event but I have been taking TV sets there for the last 2 years just to encourage the same.
There was even a guy from Wisco last May selling some very interesting tubes.

I will be paying close attention to how this goes down because we need to do this in the Mid-Atlantic Quad-state area here that is PA-MD-NJ-DE

The caution note about dumping sets is a good one. Good luck, you seem to be in a hotbed of TV interest

rca2000 07-13-2014 04:09 PM

Any interest in a 20VAGP22 20" color tube from a heathkit ? could bring it if someone is interested. --pretty sure it is good, not sure about cataracts. NOT a round tube--came from a SS set from 69-71 or so. Still have the chassis too. Still has the "heathkit shield box" on the tube around it.

Pics of 21FJP22 tube ::Notice front--NO cataracts !!

Crack and piece missing from base--but useable anyway.
Loaded with Zenith neck gear for the moment.

Tests pretty good on all guns after wake up. Not new--but more than useable for some old roundie needing it.

Bill R 07-13-2014 05:57 PM

How much for the FJP22? I may bring up my 12LP4 to sell or trade. I am sure I can get it in the car :). Of course then I have to figure out what to do with it until the first of August when I come home.

If you're in the Chicago area that long, you ought to at least stay for the ARCI Radiofest. http://www.antique-radios.org/radiofest_info.html

WISCOJIM 07-14-2014 10:23 AM

Less than a week away.

Please. if you haven't already done so, make sure to spread the word on this meet. Without people attending (and bringing TVs and related items to sell), this meet won't be successful. I'd like to see this as an annual event, but if it doesn't get a good start, this may be the last.

So call or email your TV collecting friends. Many don't read the forums here, and many that do may not look in this category to have read about the swap. Thanks.

.

Kevin Kuehn 07-14-2014 10:31 AM

I was wanting to attend this event, however I have another obligation on Saturday that's going to make it impossible for me to get back home, load up, and make the long drive safely. I sure hope it's a successful event so I can attend another in the future.

I sure hope it is too!
Most of the stuff, I'll be bringing, belongs to a friend, that's been collecting for 30 some years.
I told him to gather all tube sets, as there isn't a whole lot of interest in solid-state, at this time. :scratch2:

WISCOJIM 07-14-2014 04:34 PM

I just added a Stewart-Warner mirror-in-lid set and two Predicta Tandem sets to the list of things I'm bringing down.

I - 94 Zoo Interchange Work

Hi,
If your coming to the TV swap meet July 20, 2014 from west of Milwaukee,
you may want to take an alternate route. I - 94 east and west bound at I-894/ U.S. 45 is going to be shut down.

I copied this News Clip today.

Wisconsin drivers have one week to prepare for the summer's most unwelcome spectacle.

A full closure of I-94 westbound and eastbound, between Highway 100 and U.S. 45, is scheduled a week from now for major work on the $1.7 billion reconstruction of the Zoo Interchange, the busiest in Wisconsin.

The closure begins at 11 p.m. Friday, July 18, and ends at 5:30 a.m. Monday, July 21. Northbound and southbound traffic on I-894/U.S. 45 will remain open.

Ed

rca2000 07-15-2014 03:42 PM

Ok--so what "alternate route" do you suggest I take from CInci. Ohio then? Other than 94 or such.

You'll be fine taking I-94 all the way to the airport exit. It's where I-94 crosses the 894 bypass west of Milwaukee that's going to be messed up.
