Atwater Kent model 42 Question on Speaker

In a few hours I'm going to take a 1-hour drive to look at an AK 42. I'm curious about the speaker--I haven't seen this design among many examples. Does anyone recognize this particular design?

An AK42 is a somewhat common radio and should have a common AK speaker in it. However I cannot see what speaker you are talking about because the photo website doesn't show what you are talking about. Just post the picture if you want results.

I hesitate to bring this back to the top, but I have to make up for leaving a dead link after un-posting a photo. The set is actually a Model 37. These are my photos of the speakers:

I won't be working on the set for a while, but I started a PicasaWeb album with a few photos in case anyone is interested:

Hi Winky,

Don't you think this speaker is repairable? Were you shopping for this other speaker to get it for this radio..? Pic from your site...:scratch2:

I bet you could pull that back into shape and glue it up with some Duco cement or other magic glue type.:D

Cool radio,

I didn't suspect any problem with the speaker (which is the original with the set). I only disassembled it because I still have a child-like curiosity about what's inside things. I just happened to notice the possible flaw when looking at the photo.

All the similar models I've seen have a sort of floral-looking gizmo for the grill. This (model 37) may have preceded that type of grill, and may be the first model that didn't have a horn speaker.

Speaker tweeker

Well it's real cool.

I was going to dig out the SD (schematic drawing (old telephone company lingo)) for it and take a look at what you've got there. Love that old "quality" of building stuff. Care was taken with each radio, and not stamped out and boxed up... and out the door.

Interesting, I will check in once in a while, I got the Model 40 and 42 to go over yet.

It Doesn't Look Like an AK Speaker

For what it's worth, I've finally figured out that this speaker...

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-h...7%25252010.jpg

...is not an Atwater Kent speaker. It was manufactured in Salt Lake City, and fabricated with a finish and color to match the AK receiver.

If it's Salt Lake City, bet it's a Utah brand speaker.

One of My "Du-u-h" Moments.

It never occurred to me that "UTAH" was a brand name--I though the big, bold letters reflected state pride. Perhaps I should have shown this picture (left) with my original question. I found the same sticker on a photo (right) of a horn speaker driver.

I noticed that later "Utah" speakers were manufactured in Chicago.

Closure for this Thread

I know many of you have been staying up nights, worrying about identification of this speaker. To summarize this thread: Acquired an Atwater Kent 37 paired with an unknown model of Utah speaker. (Previous photos no longer available)

Notice on the underside of the base there are two threaded columns for screw attachment.

I was doing some research for RadioMuseum, and I came across this ad:

So, it's actually a Findlay-Apex-FADA-Utah! speaker. At the time of manufacture Utah speakers were made in Salt Lake City. I think they moved to Chicago in the 1930's.

Finally, after eight years, we can close this thread and everyone can get some sleep!

In the case of Buzzsaw I wonder if it is eternal sleep?...The domain name of his site is for sale and he has not visited in 4 years.:scratch2:

Ive considered making a somewhat similar stand with speaker under the radio out of a treadle sewing machine legs. There are so many different styles and there are Zenith brand stands, but I have yet to see one with a visible Zenith name on it.
