You boys know of any bone yards where a 65 to 69 corvair sits? looking for a hood. Will pay to have it shipped. Tried Craigs List but no luck.

There are a couple of places online where you can place a request for a part to a network of junkyards across the country. I've never used it for my Pacer (ebay has had all the parts I've ever needed for junkyard pulls), but the PO of my car did use Parts Hotline to get a Pacer gas tank. I think it was $50, less shipping.

Lord-A-Mercy, I can't even REMEMBER the last time I even SAW a Corvair in a junkyard-Or on the Street, either, for THAT matter...

Still see a lot around here. There's a pretty active club in St. Louis that hits a lot of shows.

Which is probably a good suggestion for finding a hood...check with some Corvair clubs.

I saw that one in Balt. I didn't think he would sell a hood, while he has the
entire car pretty much all together...... I don't think I would part it out
looking as complete as that car is......

My dad had a Monza, 4 single barrel carbs, 3 speed, it needed constant care, not
the commuter car he wanted, I don't think he kept it more than a year...

There was a green "2nd Series" 4 door sedan operated for years & years by an old guy & his wife who were in our church... Pretty plain car, I THINK it had an automatic, maybe a radio, & that was the only options on it.. Pretty sure they were both dead & gone by the time I came home after college in '79.. Our family doctor had a 2nd series convertible-We all went over to our mountain cabin in N. Carolina in winter 1968-69, it snowed, but the Corvair went EVERYWHERE like a trouper..

But you don't live near me, there's a huge corvair club in Chicago- we met at a Buick dealership of all places one time. I have a white Corsa 2-door with 180 Turbo engine.

Yeah, they weren't all that popular here when they were new... You'd see SEVERAL Mustangs or Camaros for every Corvair... Same way for the earlier ones-LOTS of Falcons & Vomits, Econolines... Not many Corvans..

I can see Corvairs not being popular in the mountains. In the flat Midwest they probably sold much better. Had a high school teacher in the 80s that had a '63 Monza convertible. He brought it to school once a year and showed his classes. He used to try to tell everyone it ran on rubber bands.

I don't think Corvans were common anywhere. I saw lot of Econolines and A100's well into the 80's though. My aunt and uncle had a A100 they nicknamed the "Hippy Bus."

My grandparents had one in the 60's. They lived in the Oak Park neighborhood of Chicago, and in the big record setting snowstorm of '67, '68? (I was not alive yet then) that Corvair was the only thing moving. The streets weren't being plowed fast enough the Metra and L-lines were shutting down, other cars were bogging down, but that Corvair made a number of trips to pick up relatives stranded at train stops....Until it finally got stuck in a snow drift in an alley a block from their home....

They went WONDERFULLY in the snow for the same reason VWs did-Rear wheel engine, rear wheel drive, all the weight in the rear.

I have a dealers licence and run a repair shop for over 35 years now. I saw this car at the auction it was a donation . It has only 20k for miles and the body is mint NO Rust at all. paid 800.00 for it. Had to put a master cylinder in it. Could use a rug. The hood a massive dent in the center.

Could probably be popped out, see what a body shop wants first then go looking. The repair might be less than buying/shipping combined- that's a very large heavy item.

I love Corvairs. My last daily driver was a '62 Greenbrier 6-door van. There are a couple of early production Monzas about 6 blocks from me. I'm trying to negotiate a deal with the owner for one of them. They've been parked for over 20 years, so it's a good thing I still have my shop manuals.

Today, if you tried to take the same risks at GM as the Corvair represented, you'd promptly be fired.... Which, I think, is a LOT of GM's problem..

They were MODERATELY safe as long as they only had a 4 or 6 cyl motor.. But put a small V-8 up front, & you were ASKING for trouble..

I think those Ford vans are counterweighted in the rear. Still, not enough.
