Kenwood R-2000

Buddy of mine gifted me this the other day, along w/a CYOOT 5" Sharp TV, & an indeterminant age, early-mid Sixties best guess- tube AM-SW tabletop set. The Sharp & the AM/SW set work, however the R-2000 is as dead as 4 o'clock. A call to Kenwood's Service Center indicated that they no longer support this set. I'd HATE to shit-can it, 'cause otherwise it looks practically new. Do you spose it would be worth it to take it to Terry ? If anyone here has a rather "Woolly" one, I MIGHT be talked into "Gifting" it forward...What do you fellers say ? By the bye, it DOES have the VHF module installed, which lets it pick up the air & police bands..

Dead as in no power?

bob91343 04-30-2013 04:49 PM

I am confident I can repair that. If you want to be guided through a repair, I can help with that also.

The Kenwood stuff is mostly very good, definitely better than most of the competition. I'm not familiar with that model but a manual should be available online.

Well, its more of a case "Lights are on, but nobody's home"...

bob91343 04-30-2013 07:18 PM

Does the meter move? Sometimes it's only a case of the external speaker jack or the phones jack not making contact. Tune in a local, strong broadcast station on the usual AM band and see if the meter deflects. Does it sit on zero all the time? Does it respond to the RF Gain control?

Sandy G 05-01-2013 06:06 AM

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna take it to Dr Dewick...like I said, lights come on, but nothing happens if you try to tune it, run the volume up or down....Kinda like a pithed frog in Biology class...Not exactly dead, but not alive, either..

bob91343 05-01-2013 12:08 PM

If you weren't so far away I would love to get my hands on that and get it running.

If the display does not come on, try doing a hard reset on the cpu in the radio before you throw in the towel. I used to see a lot of these in my earlier years where the radio had sat for a long time unused and would either show garbage on the display or act like it's brain dead.

"R-2000 – Disconnect the power cable with the power switch ON. Remove the
receiver top cover ( 8 screws). Ground pin 40 of the IC-12 on the PLL unit for
about 5 seconds. Reconnect power, keep the M.IN switch depressed and ground
pin 29 of IC-12 for a few seconds. Remove and then reinsert the power cable."

Sandy, good to see you again.

It's been a while since we parted on the AK.
I'd like you to read my thread above and slip in a comment.

Thanks.

Suzuki

Terry said it has a bad display module. Rotsa ruck on finding another one on a radio that's been out of production for nigh on to 20 years..

Recently, I purchased a TECSUN S-2000 receiver, which was delivered directly from Shanghai. It is excellent, and not only stylish yet neatly built and performs thoroughly in the same way.
It's a real bargain with no other model of this kind of gear to compete with it.

Sandy's beam antenna looks beaming in a 90-degrees side of me.........

Sandy G 09-15-2014 02:40 PM

Well, it was a "Gimme", nothing lost, nothing gained.. STILL have my JRC NRD-545, & my pitiful collection of junky-arse old broken-down Boatanchors... Oughta haul the whole Kit 'n' Kaboodle of 'em down to the street for the Garbageman to haul off... (grin) I DID have a Kenwood R-5000 back years ago, liked it VERY well.. Sold it for a JRC NRD-535D, Lightning got it, & then I got the 545..

The Kenwood R-2000 is a very good receiver but is has a lot of proprietary parts that are all but impossible to find. Plus there are a lot of good working examples for sale. There is really no point in messing with a defunct unit, would make a good parts unit.
