So I got the Danish modern predicta I scored at Radiofest working * and before I go to JoAnn fabrics and get some random fabric that looks ok from 10' I wanted to know if there is a source for an accurate reproduction speaker grill cloth. Anyone know of one?
http://videokarma.org/attachment.php...1&d=1569333994 * I had to replace most of the wiring harness behind the HV cage with wires from a parts Philco split chassis because it apparently burned up in the 60s and someone snipped out a section and did a lousy job of splicing in new black cloth wire with electrical tape covered in glue... CRT has no ID label....Seller claimed it was a 6.3V CRT in it (tests good like that but has HK short), but the chassis was wired for 2.68V CRT. Heater was dim and picture was a dim smeary mess at 2V heater so I moved it to 6.3V...If the heater don't open I'll take the seller's word as the truth. |
Looks nice. I would not have like replacing that wiring harness. It is real tight.
I got a pleasant surprise last night when I was working on my pedestal. The CRT is also a replacement 6.3V tube - a 21FDP4. I had tested it as a 21EAP4 and thought it was a gonner. |
The Tan/Brown, wheat, grill cloth from the page below wouldn't be the worst approximation. Or the Beige / Brown, Gold Stripe.

In a pinch would this work ? (I know it's Zenith but it's got that cool "old speaker" look to it) |
Just wanted to say that was nice find. The most "mid-century" looking TV ever made. When you see them in person you're surprised how small slender the cabinet is. Good luck with it.
|
From the pictures I've seen online and the tufts of original material escaping from the crack between the speaker board and the cabinet I think the original was white or almond-ish white with gold threads woven in. I've been told it is hard to touch these TVs for under 1k on eBay so I'm kinda surprised no one seems to be reproducing the fabric for these.

Tom,
This is where I go when I need to find something to use as grill cloth. This place has thousands of samples in books. http://www.manhattantextiles.com/ Manhattan Textiles has a store on North Ave. across from Mayfair shopping center. Take a sample of your old grill cloth along with you so you can find something that might be suitable. You will not find anything with metalic threads. I have searched everywhere. Many years ago there was a place in NY that had bolts of metalic fabrics, but none of that stuff was usable because it was too glitzy. |
I had this exact same problem with my Danish Modern. I looked in all kinds of fabric stores. I never found anything close. I ended up getting a piece from Richmond Design. I looked for the fabric on his E-Bay store , but he must be out. Check back regularly, as he seems to get different cloths all the time. That is if you don't mind waiting a bit.
The the grille cloth suppler that made lots for the antique radio community went bankrupt several years back. So patterns that were in high demand are no longer available. Tony https://www.ebay.com/str/richmonddesignsinc |
