Motorola TV Chassis Rebuild
 

Hello -

I am presently in the process of restoring an older B&W Motorola TV chassis.
The Picture Tube is not supplied.

The owner's expectations - for me to bring the chassis up to the point where
they will simply attach the Picture tube and make some fine adjustments to have a completed TV.

What are your Suggestions and Precautions ?
Cautions to be aware of in the HV section(s) without the Picture Tube attached ?

IMHO, you need some type of picture tube to do that, like one of those test setups with one in a box that has leads to connect to the chassis being worked on, or something like that.

Do you have a test CRT to fit into it to check your work?...If not I wouldn't touch that project unless they live close enough that you can readily drive there and back.

Generally the B+ is more dangerous than the HV lead for the side of the CRT. It takes 30Ma to kill a CRT only draws 1/100 of that max without sagging the supply...I've been bit by it several times and am alive to talk about it.(If the tube isn't installed stick it in a glass jar or cup so it doesn't short to ground or nuisance shock you). Safety concerns are comparable to a standard tube device, B+ is typically over 300V and can supply 10x the leathal current all day long (so don't touch it). The voltages on the yoke and plate leads are comparably dangerous.

You're probably never going to get it right without a test CRT, the customer unless (a fairly technical person who owns a test pattern generator or DVD) is never going to get the sweep adjustments right and if you live too far apart you're going to play UPS/FedEx tag till they destroy the chassis or the customer runs out of money/patience.

If you are pulling the chassis out of a big set you can use a test tube
but you may need a CRT adapter also.
I can see many pitfalls doing this job.
Why dont you post the model & chassis numbers & maybe we could give
better advice.
