Small computer CRT substitution
 

Not really a television so I didn't know where to ask.

So I had someone ship me a strange relic from AT&T's experimental days in the 80's. It's a telephone. It's a speakerphone. It's a phonebook. It's a terminal. It's AT&T's Personal Terminal 510A.

It's a STRAAAANGE thing. It's the first time I've ever seen a gel membrane used for a touchscreen, giving the CRT a really, really alien feel when you poke it.

Unfortunately while it was extremely well packed, the tube broke at the base. :tears:

It identifies as a Zenith made 9ATK10. Manufactured September 16 1985. I can find absolutely no information about the tube. Because it's a fairly basic 9" monochrome tube there's hope that I can substitute in for other tubes I almost daily handle in machines like the classic compact macs. You guys are the only people who I think might be able to find the missing link.

Are you able to remove the touch screen unit and use with a new CRT?

You have to write them and ask though, their search always says they have it in stock even though they don't.

I got a new CRT for a JVC Pyramid TV from them recently and it was only $55 or so.

It fits over the face of the CRT as a separate assembly. No glue or clips. :banana:

If I can get an idea of what the tube's specs were much less the pinout of the base I might have a better chance getting a substitute locally for far less.

For all the Zenith markings, the CRT is actually made by Clinton - give them a call. They are an American company that made their CRTs in Taiwan. Zenith B/W sets used Clinton CRTs exclusively for years - I have a 9" short neck (no ears) Clinton on the shelf that was pulled from a backless Zenith set.

Most Clinton CRTs in "raw" form are three-digit numbered somewhere. Datasheets for Clinton 678 and 951 are on the web:

Do you know if this is a Green Phosphor? Kind of odd it doesn't use the normal P* suffix.

I found this on the bay.I have no idea why they post this will burned in CRT on the bay.Maybe they are thinking its just good to check the electronics out if they are working good.

It's green. I know of only a scant few terminals that used anything besides green.

Now that I will do. I've heard the Clinton name before as they also supplied tubes for NeXT, DEC and Apple in their small displays. Looks like I'll have to call them sometime during the week.

I have a small TV of a similar size with a Clinton CRT. The TV is dead, the tube is not. It's the same CRT used in the original IBM PC monitor, but is obviously not green phosphors.

The nearest public library used to have Wyse terminals that displayed a sort of grayish-white text as I recall. They were used for the library catalogue, and the branch it replaced used them for text-only internet access as well.

I'm thinking the CRT from an Apple model G090H momitor may work. They were made in Japan though. Plenty out there in rough cosmetic condition. Not sure what CRT it uses, but the Apple model A2M2010 monitor uses a Samsung 12GBY31N. Never saw a code like that before.

I should have a access to a few IIc monitors. They won't be cheap though.

You should be able to fit it with a Mac CRT if you don't mind white. The reverse has been done to B&W Macs. There are wiring mods involved though. One I saw is a Samsung 10ATY4N.

That was the idea to fit it with the jug out of a mac. A Clinton just arrived.

Dimension wise it's identical to the Zenith but again, there's no pinout for the base. Worse yet Apple has strapped the mounts the other way around which leaves a 3/4" gap in front between the tube and the membrane. It won't work unless I can somehow flip them around but they are held in place with the steel band.
