1983 RCA TV connector trouble.
 

To most of you this probably might be stupid question. I was working on RCA model FJR478WR set. I took apart the set to do prevent maintenance. Once I started putting the tunner assemble I noticed I have a edg connector that is not labeled and I can't find a place for it to go anywhere on the board. There are only two three pin edge connectors one for IR receiver labeled P1102 or remote. The MCS tunner was a rebuild or replacement from Thomson back in 1991. I do have the Sam's and I could not find that connector anywhere on the set and Below is few pictures that show the wire and connector in question. Well the set for age actually worked fine except for dirty controls. It has a nice sharp bright picture so the tube is good and all the caps still tested with good ESR except for those old Panasonic caps that were leaking ( I now back then it wasn't Panasonic but I'm unable to spell the other name). Ps the set came with the original factory remote and it works fine.

1) where does the other end go ?
2) does the set work ?

The other end goes into the tunner assemble and I didn't try the set as I was afraid by not having it connected it might blow something up

It may be for an unused function in an institutional set etc. Had a LOT
of these apart to resolder or repair & dont remember it. You could see
where it can reach with a little slack. Also look at the Sams
& see if the tuner has any unaccounted connectors & where they go.
If me I would try the set. BUT dont blame me if it brews up !!
IIRC the chassis has pin connectors but no edge connectors UNLESS
they are on small sub-pcb's.
Maybe Johnct will pipe in. He has better grasp of RCA than me

I looked through the Sam's and could not find any mention of this tipe of connector and the only boards with edge connectors are the keypad and the remote receiver MCR 016. I spent hours trying to find were the edge connector might go. After no luck I turned on the set and it worked fine. I think it might be a feature that this set doesn't have as the boar has a sticker that says Thomson replacement board 8-91.
This set came from estate sale and there were two old TVs. One was a Zenith chroma color 2 set and this RCA color track set. Unfortunately someone bet me to the Zenith but luckily I was able to get this RCA.

Does your set have the clock set buttons ? If not, usually a metal tab was inserted into that plug to keep random time numbers from showing up on the screen.

Ok so that connector is for the time feature that this TV doesn't have. Nice to know I was not losing my vision or mind. Thanks Zeno and Damen for the help.

Here is a picture of the set in its new home. I still need to do some more cleaning to the set as it's still dirty on the sides. On that Sanyo VCR I had to change the STK voltage regulator right after I got done working on this set. On that stk module they had no thermal compound on the original and doubt it did the STK module any good. I do know STK modules are not known for being the most reliable and that's why I always save them from junk equipment. This VCR has played a lot of tapes for me over the years and was the first VCR I ever repaired back in 2018.

Well I'm not using that RCA TV anymore until I fix the sound on it. The symptom is quiet noticable on speech has really bad sibilance or like a cassette recorder in DC biase. The other is on base it comes out as distortion. I think the speaker might but I'm not 100% sure as it doesn't get better or worse depending on we're the volume set at. The first thing I going to try is to substitute another speaker once I finish with a 1983 Sony Trinitron that I'm recapping.

If it's a CTC-120 chassis, that audio problem was very common. If a customer complained about it, there were 2 condensers and a coil we would change (RCA service tip recommendation). If we just noticed it when servicing the set for other issues, we would just realign the coil instead of replacing it. It used a small squared head alignment tool instead of the more common hex head one.

The set does the CTC-120 revision A chassis. I don't want to be a bother to anyone but which coil one. I have a picture of the main board from the Sam's. Sorry if the quality is poor on the photo as it seems then max file size 122kb. I had to resize the photo all the way down to 300 by 300 inorder to get it to uploaded. So I'm afraid it's going to be pretty blurry.
