Even the manufacturer misnamed it

This is the first time I've seen an under-cabinet item called "under the counter" by its manufacturer (Magnavox-branded, no less):

General Electric had "under the counter" coffee makers....radios...televisions...can openers too.

Wow. Apparently no-one really thought about what they were writing.

lol maybe it was such a colloquialism that the manufacturers just called it that.

I had a Philco that appeared to be the same set.

Leave it to marketing to say something dumb and spread it around.

As I recall, all under cabinet mounted devices were under counter. I don't ever recall seeing "under cabinet" on anything. I have a pic of our can opener which would have sounded dumb if it had said "space encabinet":D

Googling either under counter or under cabinet gets all devices, most of which are under cabinet, but some of which are actually under counter. So I guess under counter is just used too frequently to correct.

I always referred to them as over-the-counter or under-cabinet.
