Wow, that's just absolutely tasteless....

First of all let me apologize for this brutal attack on this once nice radio from my end of the state. We are not all that way. Also my condolances for a once fine Zenith console. On the other hand if he has sold 20 at $1400+ dollars, does make you wonder. Makes me wonder where he would find 20 and who would pay that much for one of these. 1450*20=$29000. Not a bad sideline.

being in the business myself I can state with authority: instead of sitting unused in a display, or in a basement until eventual disposal, it is now somewhere.

People all the time tell me how valuable old radios are...if that is true, why am I able to generally buy them all for $5 or less each?

Case in point, I restored an early panasonic transistor table radio with a wood case, and a GE tube amfm table top to pristine condition, and had the wife paint the wood cases in her 'shabby chic' motif. Both radios sold quickly, for decent prices, and play in someones house TODAY. Which after all, IS the point of being in it.

I agree, it's not like it's a rare radio. I just think the way the seller did it is hideous :yuck:

Personal taste thing I guess.

That idiot is not among us! Most of us wouldn't do that.
God! Is that a hidious POS or what? :thumbsdn:

consoleguy67 01-25-2016 10:46 AM

If he wanted to modify it to play MP3 files, or an IPod, that's fine. But why destroy the cabinet in the process?

hmmm, most of yinz 'HERE' might not do that, but most of the planet ELSEWHERE most certainly would. re-tasking is all the rage. Have you not 'pinterest' in your locale? I assure you that any of the facebook or pinterest following groups have active members that outnumber the active members here by a couple orders of magnitude. such is the world we live in.

what this guy did certainly is marketable, and certainly looks lucrative. money talks....you know what else walks....

my post is not to be construed that *I* would go that route, but other routes I do go. Next project is a 100yr old trunk converted into a trunk with a stereo radio inside (got the idea off tv....the one on tv sold for over $300 for a $50 investment. I happen to have a couple trunks in stock, a couple stereo radios with bad cases, and a few hours free time eventually. that knock at the door? opportunity)

"A fool and his money are soon parted."

A guy I used to speak with regularly knew I like old TVs. He came across one of those Pinterest projects and acted as if he liked the idea. Not exactly a smart thing to do in my presence.

Perhaps, but the fact of the matter is that this is simply the wrong audience to gain much agreement or acceptance for those kinds of "upgrades".

And also the reason why a TV with a good picture tube generally sells for less than half of what a picture tube alone sells for.....nobody wants to be the one to "kill" it.

The Plasma Balls on the sides take it into the realm of tacky, otherwise it wouldn't have looked too terrible.

maxhifi 01-25-2016 02:53 PM

I think that what whoever buys this thing really wants is a juke box

wa2ise 01-25-2016 03:25 PM

It now has built in RFI (radio frequency interference) generators built in:

My local fishtanker claims he gets $500 and up for his monsters and says he has trouble keeping up with demand. I can't get $50 for a good working TV from anyone but him.
