As many know Speed Queen makes the last real top load
washer. I heard a vicious rumor that the gov was going
to force new water restrictions on washers. So I wrote SQ.
All they would tell me is that new tougher restrictions are
coming for 2018.

Bottom line is I am sure this will either be the end of there
top loader or a total re design. Even though my Maytag is
only 35 yrs old I will be getting a new SQ before its too late.
So if you want an old school washer to go with your TV's
act soon. It even comes with a REAL warranty & is built
like a tank !

F'kin-A right Zeno - this is why I bought an SQ AWN-542 just 4 years ago! It may well be the last $800 I need to spend on a washer!

Of course it was not "recommended" or check-rated by Consumer's union due its water usage but Im on a freaking well in a well-rained area. who T.F. cares?

Dave, I did the same about 2 years ago. Great washer. Should last me past when I care about it.

Are Amana products OK?

Right now I have a 1995 GE top load washer, and a Kenmore dryer I bought in '79 with a washer. The original matching washer rusted out and started leaking.

Amana appliances are now made by Whirlcrap. Don't buy them. Get a Speed Queen or a vintage washer. Speed Queens are made in Ripon, WI by the way.

And.. what's wrong with Whirlpool? My fridge is a Whirlpool 22 years old and has never needed any repair not even a light bulb. My previous early '70s Sears Coldspot I think I replaced the condenser fan motor 3 or 4 times and the evap motor at least once in 16 years I had it.

The Whirlpool uses about 1/4 the electricity the old one did too. When running, 120W vs 450W!

I'd buy a Whirlpool washer before a GE, not too sure how other brands stack up. My parents bought a GE recently... talk about a lemon. They have a Whirlpool or Amana fridge that has given them no trouble in the 12+ years they've had it.

That said, I still like my Bendix. It has to be bolted to the floor to prevent "walking", but that S.O.B. will still be cleaning clothes when I'm in the ground... unless of course the enviro-lunatics have their way. Then we'll have to take our clothes down to a creek and beat 'em on rocks like damned animals...

The only negative with my 22 year old GE washer is, if it's running, DO NOT change the "Wash Spin" selector from "Normal Fast" to "Gentle Slow". Must lift the lid or stop it first otherwise if you try to change speeds while it's spinning a little wire thingy underneath that operates the speed shifter mechanism will pop off and will be laying on the floor underneath when you pull it out to see what broke. Happened to me probably 2 weeks after I bought it. A friend that was in the appliance repair biz came over and hooked the wire back on and showed me how it happened. I put a big label over the knob DO NOT CHANGE SPEED WHILE RUNNING! GE should have done better than that.

Probably the best washer for getting cloths clean was GM's
Frigidair pulse cone from the 60's. Trouble was they
beat themselves to death & after 5 yrs nobody wanted to
touch one. Super complex. Probably more complex than a
turbo 400 tranny.

That's what my Mom had when I was a kid. Would have been in the '50s. It wore out early '60s and got replaced with a Kenmore.

Just a rumor - 22 top-load models between Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and GE with top load. Many are smaller cu. ft models, but still available. The LGE and Samsung lobby lost the battle to place gov't restrictions. I guess many missed the 60 Minutes episode exposing LG, Braun, Philips and Samsung's lobbying and their outright lies - all designed to deep six American washer manufacturing.

Yeah, politics aren't to be discussed - I was merely stating fact.

All regulatory efforts are currently aimed at ENERGY efficiency - no longer a water issue.

Well I did pick up the new SQ. This is one sweet machine.
Super fast wash & VERY quiet running. Big ass motor in it to.
The ole Maytag is in the cellah resting til one of my harmonics
need it or I get greedy & sell it.
#1 son has the old whirlpool design dropped in the 80's that
had the wig-wag so he probably wont need it.
#2 son has a modern POS so I am sure it will end up there.

BTW I opted for manual controls. This saves $$ ( I would pay extra
for them ), keeps service EASY & reduces the "parts NLA" problem
to near zero.

A fully-enclosed motor like the older machines? I've pulled motors from curbed modern washers, completely open frame, couldn't be taken apart without brute force (one of them anyway) and turned out to be Chinese-made. Naturally I dumped them.

I had been looking casually for an older electric motor for a DIY bench grinder. I'm sure my old curb-find Viking dryer has a suitable motor but I don't want to part it out. Got it over three years ago and haven't done a thing to it. Built a DIY bench grinder in my youth, no idea what I did with it. Just yesterday I picked up an old squirrel cage blower with a GE 1/3 HP motor.

It looks like the envirofreaks ,others put the end on another product.Does a bear sheet in the woods near a stream.Yes.
