JVC BR-S800U playback speed issue

Hey folks,

I have a JVC BR-S800U SVHS editing deck that seems to be flawless in every way. The issue I'm encountering is playing back a tape recorded in EP (SLP) speed. The player seemingly can't handle it at all. Sometimes when it encounters material in that speed it plays it in slow motion. Sometimes it plays it fast. Other SP recorded content on the same cassette plays fine. Is it because that player can only handle SP speed? I have the service manual which covers all of the soft menu settings as well as basic operation of the machine. I can't find anything in there that specifically states which speeds are supported and which are not. Anyone here familiar with this deck?

That is a commercial grade editing VCR with single SP speed.
