This is part of the usual musuem question of preservation versus conservation and restoration. It's a big subject in the whole world of museum keeping. You can argue it in various ways and there will be no fully satisfactory conclusions.

I get that. But to me (and just me!) the rebuild was an experiment as well as a restoration. So gathering data a few minutes a year to see if the experiment is successful makes sense. To me! But hey, I get where they are coming from. But the curiosity would be killing me. Heck, I had nothing to do with it and I wonder!
