neon lamp for testing and one other question

I was reading in an old TV repair magazine that you can do a preliminary HV test by placing a neon lamp near the HV area and it will light the lamp. I wouldn't mind having one of them for testing, can someone point me in the right direction?
Also I have a Sencore SS117 tester and I would like to read the manual, but mine did not come with one. How different is the SS137, which I found a copy of?
Will probably be a couple years till I learn enough to use it, but it looks cool and I'd like to read the manual.
Thanks
Tony

IIRC Radio Shack still stocked some mini Neon bulbs (been a while since I checked). You can find mini neons in some of the test lights electricians use to check if an outlet or lamp junction box is hot. There are also parts houses on the net that should stock them.
CFLs will also work in place of the neon (though if you break one open you will have a mercury spill).
Any neon or florescent should work....The small ones are nice since you can gut a defunct plastic pen, glue a bulb roughly it's diameter to the end and have a built in "chicken stick"/means of finding the bulb easier.

One of these might work:

I would clip the leads and mount it on the end of a wood or plastic stick to avoid shocks

Go to the thrift store and there should be old electric blanket controllers that might have one. Don't pay more than a dollar for it though.
The B&K 1076 came with one as I recall.

If you don't mind buying a box of 10:

One of these glued to the end of a soda straw makes a fine no-contact AC HV detector... however, it will not detect DC at the anode button of the crt.
