Philco Seventeener P2712WH - what year?

Hi, my first non-solid state set. Working as-is, and I made some 1960s programming for it. I need a better camera to do this, but it was still fun. I hope y'all enjoy it. Can anybody tell me more about it?

Your set is a lot better than some of Philco's earlier offerings. Is the badged "Seventeener"?
The set is probably 1964 or newer, because of the UHF tuner. :thmbsp:

Schematic is in sam's 1156, and that folder should have a date around that set's release.

Thank you. Yeah, it says Seventeener on the front.

Sams #1156 was issued early in 1971.

I see that the tubes are all Philco and all the date codes on them are early 1966.

I believe the Philco Seventeener was the successor to the Briefcase 19. The latter was made around 1961 and was VHF only. I had a Briefcase 19 (a trash find in the early 1970s) and liked it; good picture, good sound and all, although the VHF antenna in the handle was missing (both dipoles had been broken off). The lack of UHF didn't bother me at the time, as my area near Cleveland, an eastern suburb, only had three TV stations on channels 3, 5 and 8. However, my set gave me excellent service, serving as my main watcher when my Sears Silvertone roundie color set quit in 1973 (video output tube socket broke out of a PC board ) until I found another color set, a Toshiba-built Silvertone 16-inch rectangular, in 1976.

I don't know anymore what drove me to get rid of that Philco, as it was still working well even after I left where I was living from 1972-'75 (long story and OT) and returned to my home town. However, I never again saw another set like it, and probably never will again in this age of flat-panel HDTV, unless such a set turns up at an estate sale or yard sale somewhere, on eBay or CL. These older sets are not exactly rare (yet), but one doesn't see them every day, either.

I picked up one of those at an estate sale a few years back (since passed on to another member) & I would agree with the 1966 date. That was right around the time they started using the Philco-Ford name instead of just Philco.

The model P2712wh is listed in Sams as in 1156 SED... and folders 1146 to 1217 are listed in the publication dates list as 1971, but the evidence certainly points to the set being produced around 1966... so are the SED schematic dates different than the normal folders? Or perhaps the SEDs are delayed? :scratch2:

I have found a few Firestone ads over at Newspapers.com. One from Chillicothe, OH 8/25/66 showing the P2712WH for $116.95. Another one with a picture of a P2710BR "Seventeener" for $113.88. I put that price in one of those online inflation calculators and got $868 in today's money. "No money down & no payment till Feb. 1967" the ad says.

Thanks for the due diligence. I have a 19" color with 1966 dated tubes, that only has "Philco" and "SS" on it, and I thought itr was a 1967 model. Maybe we can nail down a date that change occurred.

I have some SED's that came out 5 years after the set did. Maybe Philco overlooked giving Sams a set, until....enough of them found their way into non-factory service orgs, who probably did not want to deal with Philco's exclusive system to obtain a schematic:scratch2:.
