Tune the T/O where there's a lot of the "Donald Duck" sounds-between 7 & 8 MC is a good place to start-turn the BFO on, & then turn the BFO control VERY SLIGHTLY one way or the other until you get intelligible speech out of them. Try the loudest one you can find, try to get it tuned in as strong as you can, just start playin' around...You'll get there.

I own most models of TO and enjoy them all. If I had to keep only one, I guess it would be the 7G605. You can see them at:

Note that the 1000 and 3000 models are fairly common, and you shouldn't have to bankrupt yourself to own one. I have owned two of each type and didn't spend more than $40 for any of them.

If you limit yourself to eBay, then of course you'll pay a premium. I bought one of my 3000-1s at a garage sale for $5.

you don't have the earlier Royal 7000 in your collection? i love mine and use it every day, although shortwave stations are few and far between these days. AM and FM come is really sharp, so i think the radio is working right. it was the last of the american made point-to-point wired breed.

The finest of the Zenith Trans-Oceanic radios is really the Royal 7000 and D7000Y. The Trans-Oceanic radios didn't get FM until the Royal 3000 in 1963. FM didn't really catch on until the middle to late 1960's.

yeah, i love mine! i have it by our bed. my wife and i fall asleep to the radio every night (i turn it off as i'm about to doze off).

Just picked up a 7000-2. Most of the contemporary accountings that I read give that one the edge because of the gear tuning upgrade, slightly more spread out SW bands and outright rarity. I like the strength/center tune meters myself. This thread is stone cold, but it still comes up in search engines. I remember them from when I was a kid. They're literally iconic. Is there are group or section of VK that focuses just on T/O's? I would've thought that might've been more of an AK thing, but NBD.....thanks!

I didn't know this thread was here. My first great portable was a '72 TransOceanic 7000. I bought another one on Ebay for peanuts, repaired it, and it resides in the dungeon. The performance isn't what I expected or it needs properly realigned. Otherwise, it has great tone quality and batteries seemingly last forever. Sometimes I can receive SSB with the BFO.
