I've got two 1941 models, a Philco 41-295, and a Zenith 8-S-563. I also have a Philco 39-116 (the one with the mystery control), but it still needs a lot of work, and is currently literally sitting underneath a pile of boxes, so I can't get a pic.

I've got a 41-295 too! My parents bought it at an auction in 1979, and I restored it for them many years later. It's now in my possession in regular use :)

I've had almost every Philco console there is, including the 39-116. Never had mine working either......

i own sevral of those older philco and zenith radio consoles from the 40s. its hard to find one thats not in horrible condition, but they are fairly reliable units, most of mine have worked :D :thmbsp: and givin what they are, in all fairness, the sound quality isnt half bad! especially when you get one with a aux/phono hookup. its intresting to hear booty bass gangsta rap blaring out of a 70 year old radio.:D

Adam 12-08-2011 11:50 PM

Yep, I'm a big fan of 1939-42 Philcos. The only real downside is all the rubber wire with crumbling insulation that you have to replace. I used to also have a 42-690, with the BOL phono, but the cabinet was badly water damaged, and the chassis had a mouse nest in it made from that pink insulation, so I just parted it out. My all-time favorite console is the 42-1016P, with the mystery control, BOL, and old FM band. I've always found it kind of disappointing that Philco didn't continue using the BOL and mystery control after the war.

You can really crank up the 41-295 too, with the push-pull 42s it has. I've recently gotten into weightlifting, and with it heavy metal, (listening to Ray Conniff and Herb Alpert 1960s-easy-listening-type-stuff that I usually listen to doesn't really work as well when you're trying to bench press) It is some kind of height of weirdness, to be listening to 1980s heavy metal, from mp3 files on my 2000 computer, through my homebrew tube AM transmitter (built on a 1959 Magnavox console amp chassis), on my 1941 Philco radio.:D

stereorob 12-09-2011 12:00 AM

hell, ive played death metal and gangsta rap through a 1926 everready model 1 radio with a horn. now that was just strange :D

Once upon a time I attempted to play "Metal Machine Music" (on 8-track) in my car. Then it caught fire...

Remember Ward Cleaver's hi-fi from Leave It To Beaver? Here's a fair screen capture of June playing a record on it. It has no receiver in it, was available with and without that year. General Electric "Canterbury", 1961. I'm looking for one preferably with the radio and Vacu-Magic tone arm.

Here's a 1960 GE stereo console that I rebuilt for a customer a few years ago.
It has a Voice of Music changer with a Sonotone cartridge and a new rubber idler pulley.
All new caps in the amp and speaker crossovers and all new tubes. Has Aux inputs and a tape loop!

IVE ALWAYS LOVED THE FISHER CONSOLES. ive had a few over the years. but sadly they dont last long in one piece around my house if they have stand alone tube receivers built into them. :D

Here's a Steelman console I have. AM radio and record player.

holmesuser01 01-09-2012 09:36 AM

Other than the Magnavox consoles that neighbors had in the neighborhood, I have never seen any of these Fisher, VM, or any DuMont consoles. I've got an old mono RCA console in the garage.

The Fishers were really lovely units. I had, and donated, a GE Vacuumatic console. The thrift store got some good money for it, too, and I was happy.

Some of those basic models sound remarkably good.

Kamakiri 01-09-2012 08:05 PM

You guys are inspiring me, and causing me to start getting packed in! :D

I just brought home a six foot long Zenith/Voice of Music console stereo. Somewhere along the line, it's been modified with very heavy duty adjustable crossovers. Price was $25 in a beautiful Danish Modern cabinet with not a scratch on it.

Seller said that it didn't work, and the reason why was stupid.....somewhere along the line, someone disconnected all of the speakers. I assume that there must have been, making this 2 for 2, some external speaker hookup.

I removed the huge back to expect to find a small Voice of Music 6BQ5 amp similar to what's in the RCA I just got. Nope. Push pull stereo 6L6's, on an amp that's got to have a footprint of about a foot square. This is serious audio. And what amazing sound!

I'll post pics tomorrow :)

Kamakiri 01-09-2012 09:17 PM

Turns out that this is a Voice of Music console, model 816-2, from 1960. It's got a Zenith label on the front lower left corner that has a pilot light, and has a Zenith stereophonic tube tuner. Here's a picture of what it looks like:

http://www.thevoiceofmusic.com/popup....jpg&TITLE=816

Reece 01-10-2012 06:08 AM

So somebody modded it with the crossover and Zenith tuner? Maybe had no tuner at all originally? Sounds hefty!

Kamakiri 01-10-2012 07:48 AM

Y'know, I'm not sure exactly what was done, or if this is the way it came from the factory. Here's the unit itself:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9...d/IMG_5340.jpg

Here's the tuner/pre setup, below the preamp are the two crossover adjust knobs :

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9...d/IMG_5341.jpg

There's a Zenith OEM decal on the back that has the tuner model number and a tube layout. It also seems that someone added a mono/stereo knob on the back with again what looks like a factory decal, but someone had to notch out the vent holes in the waferboard for it. I'd take more pics, but my camera's out of charge......

This is an interesting find indeed. Figuring what it is, alone, is worth the $25 I paid for it :)

Nick_the_'Nole 01-10-2012 08:20 AM

If you look closely around the side edges of the tuner, the wood seems to be a different color... which would indicate to me that something else was in there originally. It may not have been a tuner though, it's more likely it was a little record bin or something.

I would think the 'proper' tuner for that thing is the V-M 1413. It was intended as a drop-in upgrade for the phono-only consoles.

Kamakiri 01-10-2012 10:00 AM

Spoke to a very nice gentleman at http://www.thevoiceofmusic.com/ this morning.

He informed me that the 800 series never came with a tuner, but that there was a slot for adding one. Apparently whoever had this, added the Zenith one.

Trying to figure out what to do with the unit now.......

stereorob 01-10-2012 10:59 PM

here are a few i have in storage in my long forgotton teenage hangout garage of yesteryear. when i went up north last year, i snapped these. these consoles have not seen power, or the light of day in 10+ years. someday i will go back for them..
