End of Broadcast TV?
 

Well, I keep hearing these advertisements on my local stations to write to your senators, congressmen, FCC, government etc. to save broadcast TV. I suppose eventually broadcast TV will disappear whether we like it or not. Probably not in the next 10 years, but the way this country going and so money hungry, who knows. Right!!, make us all pay for cable, satellite, internet TV and streaming data on our smart phones. Big corporations almost run the whole country now, and of course it's all about dollars, millions and billions. Broadcast has a very important role in this country, and I hope it stays that way. Then whats next? The end of broadcast radio? So are we going to just have to stream radio and TV on our smartphones? What about natural and man made disasters? Broadcast doesn't use wired cable and internet. Communication is vital and this has been proven during several disasters like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, etc. Radio and broadcast TV doesn't require wires, cell phones towers all over the city and country, that can be destroyed in a disaster. Good old broadcast can keep people in touch, and allow them to communicate.

You're going to have a hell of a time killing off the AM and FM bands.

AM is almost completely worthless...... It's just a haven for the worst of
right wing morons like Limblowme, and all his clones.... They can shut
AM down any time they want.....

I doubt that broadcast is going anywhere soon.

I don't remember all the details, but those ads are basically a scare campaign started by the networks when a recent streaming/copyright related ruling didn't go entirely their way - not that it went completely in favor of the streaming company either.

Yah, there is more scare tactics than truth no matter what the subject.
One was that CBS was going to turn off their transmitters if this new web
company was going to get away with sending their shows over the internet.
Aero I think was the name.... They lost, but I don't recall if it was a complete
loss, or partial. They have picked up a cable tv business model but over the
internet.....

I wonder what would have happened if CBS did stop transmitting...? Become a HBO
kinda company...? Of slowly gone off into oblivion.....

anyway, there will be some new BS next week.....

No loss here.With todays crap programming why bother.Except for the local news .

They got to get rid of the crap cheap produced reality crap and the poorly written scripted shows to make me come back. If they shift back to 1950's to 1980's standards which is the time that I enjoyed watching TV shows it will be worth having the station to continue.

Don't get me going on the useless DTV transition.

In a way, AM is almost dead. The noise level from CFC bulbs, flatscreen TV's and laptops/tablets make only the strongest few stations useable.
The FCC is looking into reducing the noise but I would say good luck on that!

Can't see broadcast TV & radio ending here in England, most folks (over 80%) watch an OTA service called Freeview, (about 40 TV & 30 odd radio stations) there's also Freesat, About 150 TV & loads of radio stations) Freesat from SKY (you need a viewing card for that, it's free, more TV than Freesat) & if you take your phone & broadband from Virgin Media they give you Free-cable. The ones you pay for are Virgin Media cable & SKY premium, films & sports channels. I'd cry if broadcast radio ended as I always listen to Smooth FM or BBC Radio 2 in my car..

Radio will not go all digital altogether yet.I hope not.

AM here has a glut of everybodies brother and sister has a talk show on bull crap from the news headlines.

There is a couple of music stations still on the air.Plus a couple of all news stations I tune in.

FM here is stuck on a 20 song rotation playlist with the same overplayed tunes everyday on any formatted stations.

Thank goodness for the internet.I watch most of my TV online.

About two years ago I dump the extended cable because of all the bull crap shows on it and got sick paying $5 plus dollars to ESPN that I never watch.



Now the Cable company bills me a $1.50 as a broadcast TV fee.
Which I think is BS.
