Can you identify this vintage TV and is it worth picking up?
 

Saw this big old TV in a dumpster-divable area and wonder if someone can identify it and whether it would be worth trying to collect.

That's a Mitsubishi, from the late 80's-early 90's. So it's the same vintage as that BPC sitting next to it.

Yup its an MGA / Mitsubichi. ( three diamonds brand, made Jap Zeros ! )
Not of value at all unless you want to fix it. Well built set with good
pix. Just remember its free BUT may not be free if you throw it away
in the end.

Definitely a Mitsubishi. If it were me, I'd run in the other direction...fast.

I've heard good things about those sets, but the only SS sets welcome under my roof are deltagun Zeniths (and my Sony super-fine-pitch HD CRT)...All othe SS sets waste space the more valuable tube sets of the 40's-early70's are more deserving of.

Wife and I bought a Mitsubishi when we got married in 89. We're still watching it to this day and I've not so much as ever cracked the lid. Apparently they used very high quality electrolytics during that time frame. The picture still looks incredible. It's the newest TV we have. Dumb luck I guess. :dunno:

I may have commented too quickly, but poor past experience working on that brand still sticks in my mind even after all these years. Mitsubishi projection televisions were the only brand that we flat-out refused to service back in the 90's, and although we did take in the direct view models, most were no picnic. Their CRT sets were certainly better, but parts were pretty much unavailable for anyone who wasn't a Mitsubishi authorized service center (unless you wanted to pay list price plus from Fox International). I always thought it was a shame, because overall build quality was above average.

There's a good chance there's nothing wrong with it. 2 TVs on the curb makes me think somebody was cleaning out storage or after an eviction. If you have any interest, you'd better pick it up before the junk men neck the crt for the yoke coil. Assuming they haven't already...

Wondering if Mitsubishi was the ones that licensed Triniron tube that they called diamontron after license ran out from Sony. Maybe that was only in computer monitors but still wonder anyway.

The face of the jug looks spherical rather than cylindrical, I suspect that a common shadow mask lurks behind it, not a Trinitron aperture grill. :scratch2:

Cant speak for monitors but no MGA consumer sets had trinitrons. IIRC
they used to call the blue screened MGA's Diamondvision. Those were
the BEST MGA's from the late 70's to mid 80's. The newer they got the
more average they became. Sony did label some monitors for Mac & probably
others. The only other tube that was up to the Trinies was the 14" Zenith
FTM's But they were a $2000 in the day.

STORY TIME Someone took in a 27" Sharp. When we write them up we
would just glance at the set & knew the brand. I grabbed it & noticed it was an MGA. SURPRISE !!! Replaced the on/off relay, that blue square one.
Used the Sharp part. By law all old parts have to go to the customer
(except CRT's, modules etc.). When the customer found out his expensive
MGA was 100% Sharp he blew a gasket.
