This guy is going a little bit over 140 MPH in his car!

Man, I would be afraid to go anywhere near that fast. I froze up in some guy's '80 Camaro once when he was tearing around some side streets. He slowed to a crawl when I said I wanted to get out though.

Also, I thought the Bluesmobile, a 1974 Dodge Monaco with a 440 and a police-certified 140 MPH speedometer, was going pretty darn fast, doing 118 at one point, then I saw this. That scene was re-shot with people walking in the background to prove that the film hadn't been sped up.

My Puter wouldn't download any of these, it thought they were full of Malware...Your explanation notwithstanding... Oh, well..

Username1 07-21-2013 06:53 PM

I went 117 in my 73 mustang once, and 110 im my 89 prelude, smooooth like glass in that car. And quite a fun sound to open and close the sunroof at that speed.

Would not do over 100 on a bike though.... I use to do 50 down this one hill on my mt bike when I was a kid (25) not no more though....

Jon A. 07-21-2013 07:07 PM

Sound like you would have done well as a stunt driver in the original Gone in 60 Seconds (which I can't find on DVD anywhere around here).

I used to do that sort of thing on a bike (a regular bike, no motor), often slamming on the rear brake, leaving a long black smear on the pavement. Never again.

Back around 25 yrs ago, one pretty Sunday morning, I got my '67 Lincoln Pervertable out on the 4-lane when it was pretty much deserted, to see what she'd do. It has a 462, the last year for it, in mid-68, they switched to the 460 Ford corporate big block, which was TOTALLY different from the Lincoln 462. The big ol' Lincoln got up to 100 indicated in no time, & had PLENTY left, despite its nearly 3-ton weight. But I started thinkin', you're in an almost 25 yr old car that has no top, loosy-goosy front end, questionable brakes...Mebbe you'd better slow down...So I did, to a mere 70, as if that woulda made any difference..

Username1 07-22-2013 06:44 AM

Yah, I did mine on a Oklahoma straight country road you could see 500 feet in every direction, no curves, no trees, no guard rails, no cars...... It was before I put all the sport suspension stuff on the mustang, so over 100 steering just became a suggestion. It took a while to get to 117, after 90 it just kinda accelerated slow.... 117 must have been around top end. The Prelude had more to go, just did it in a different spot, began to run out of straight road. Heart rate matched the mpg needle all the way..... Wonder if the same thing happened to that guy on the motorbike as it went to 220.......

I've seen on youtube kids today get it up to speed, get out of the drivers seat and stand on the roof..... I guess I was really sane.....

I was able to view the first one, but the second and third kept crashing my vlc player before it could open them, didn't try any more of them.

I have a friend that has a Honda Repsol and quite often hits 185 driving into work(he lives in a rural area). I think he nuts but to each his own.

I absolutely love Volvo's. They make some quick cars now a days. Here's a couple vids:

I hope the guy was ok!!

Drag race between Dodge Hellcat and Tesla S......

The Tesla has instant torque and much better tire grip and got off the line much faster than the Hellcat, so it looks like it cheated......but apparently not. The Hellcat was never going to catch up.

I've done 140 in my car. On a drag strip though.

Lets go fast in something most under 55 yrs old
never heard of. Keep in mind this car was NOT meant to be
sports car. I did have the pleasure of driving one once,
one of the super charged ones. My uncle inherited one
& we got to take it on a beat run before it got auctioned.

So kids crack open a beer, light up a Lucky & hop in.
When we get back see the other videos on Studes
like the Hawk & Lark that can also fly.

You talking about the Studebaker Avante? IIRC those had the highest top speed of anything mass produced on the road at the time.
I've heard their compacts were real good drag cars if you wedged the biggest engine stude offered in to 'em.

I've opened up the throttle on my '78 Lincoln Mark V on the highway before....Speedo only reads up to 85MPH, so with that 460 V8 under the hood and no load there was still plenty of acceleration left after the needle pegged...I'd imagine she'll reach 'mystery speed', as I call anything over 85, filled to the gills with TVs too...I've had her close to that fully loaded with tube TVs a couple of times and it seemed like she still could do much more if I had the stones/sufficient insanity to ask. :D
There is quite a sensation of speed when driving a 20' 5000lb car in a non-sedate manner...

zeno 01-26-2017 10:16 AM

Yup
And I forgot the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG8pdR6VAXw

Fastest production car for 2 yrs. You could buy a faster hand made
exotic but any middle class American could walk in & buy one.
Life was so simple. Just drop a little super charger in & pour
more gas in.
My stupidest ride was my '72 Toronado. Burried the speedo at
120 mph on Rt2 one nite. Bias ply tires with snows up front
Also abt a 5,000 lb car, 455 cid. You know the feel, or, lack
of it in a land yacht over 100mph. Damn scary......

Electronic M 01-26-2017 12:54 PM

At 'mystery speed' there is a certain 'floaty-ness' to the suspension and feel to the steering that gives the impression of 'if I hit a fat racoon it might not stay planted on the road'. Combine that with increased stopping distance, and you can bet that extra care and maximal focus kick in as SOP when doing something like that.

I may end up replacing the suspension in the Lincoln when it warms up....On last fall's ETF run in that boat I found that with a load of TVs up in the 74-80MPH range the suspension will go into nearly undamped slow oscillation if stimulated by a rather good size bump in the road....I think it rocked around 5-8 cycles after the worst one...Disconcerting on a curve with a decent bit of traffic around all doing about the same speed.:smoke:

DavGoodlin 01-27-2017 03:39 PM

I was only ever crazy enough to go over 120 when I had two different 1973 Plymouth Fury II, police models. When I was dissed by drivers of "fashionable" cars, the MoPars just wouldn't chicken out.

These 5000 pound boats truly float since you are getting NO feedback via the power steering. The front brakes were disc, not drum so it stopped straight. The second Fury had a 440 interceptor that had reserve to mock that 140 certified speedo. I think I hit 130 but that is still freaking nuts!

Now, my 69 Grand Prix has 255-60R14's I had put on it new in 1988. It still gets out every few months but No effing way I go over 85 until I replace tires and shock absorbers.

A friend of mine had a 1974 Pontiac Grandville with "radial tuned suspension" known as the rocket used to bury the 120 speedo on a nearby stretch of interstate. Sure, we were nuts but nobody was on the road at 2am then either. Also, you DO NOT do this during season when deer were jumping DOT fences, either. That highway was known as the "UL testing" range.

I was never so glad to be back on terra firma as when he drove his '79 Trans Am on a wicked winding rising-dropping, turns banked totally the wrong way, roads he took to work every day. That car had the wimpy Olds 6.6 smog motor but with the suspension he made it "walk and talk". I think the speedo stopped at 85 too, what a joke! Never was a law to stop at 85 or 100, just a bone the automakers threw the NTSHA.

Dude111 01-30-2017 09:49 AM

I think I would be scared to go that fast!! (If ya hit a bump on a motorcycle going 220 like that guy did,ah man!!)
