It allowed remote locations to use a telephone line as a connection to the central computer as opposed to purchasing or leasing a private line.
Now do not get too comfortable with the name "Telex". It refers to a company and a a switched network that often operated alongside analog telephone but because Telex predated the modem it was not compatible until years later. This is a good time to
