A radium dial/indicator presents no real hazard, so the long as the radium is OUTSIDE of your body. You'd be surprised how much effort goes into developing technologies to destroy tissue with radiation more effectively. There is a reason the alpha particle is considered essentially useless of cancer treatment purposes.
