Granted, printed circuit boards were not very good at first. And, I know Zenith really pushed their "handcrafted" approach.

Zenith made tube type PC board radios in the mid 60's. Seemed like only one year. The boards were very poor quality were heat sensitive. The first Royal 500's with PC board construction were alright.
Any radio collectors have or seen the early 40's Zenith radios that have the molded bakelite chassis. the chassis was mounted upside down in the cabinet and it was rather trouble-prone. It didn't do Zenith's reputation any good!
As I understood, they were calling them back to the factory.
