I'm not familiar with the set, but have you tried subbing the tuner? There's an old Castle replacement tuner on the 'bay right now, auction 390094156976. We used to use the PTS equivalents in sets that had mangled shafts or were DIY disasters. 6.3V, B+ and RF AGC voltage are all that's needed. The shafts on most of the "universal" replacements were concentric D-shafts, easily cut with a tubing cutter (outer FT shaft) and a hacksaw blade (main tuner shaft).
