Hi Leo , welcome to Videokarma .

To get right to the point , I will say that if your statement "no tv repair experience" actually means "no vacuum tube electronic experience" your best bet would be to put the tv away for a while and get a couple of cheap "AA5" tube radios and practice "Recapping" them before you try repairing the TV . To be honest , you've already made the first big mistake of owning that vintage tv , NO antique electronics should ever be plugged in before several checks are made , shorted capacitors can very well destroy expensive parts (transformers) that would otherwise be fine if the shorted caps are replaced before the first power up .

PS , you have placed your thread in the wrong area of the forum , this being the "antique radios" subforum , your thread will get the most tv based answers up in the "early b/w and projection tv" subforum , I will ask a moderator to move it there for you . In closing I'll say if your not familiar with the terms "Recap" and "AA5" a search here will provide lots of info to help you plan your next steps with the tv
