I think someone is shooting you a line of bullcrap. The biggest color TV that I've seen that used vacuum tubes was a 25". Sony came out with a 26" CRT set (solid state) in the very early '80's. The oldest 27" CRT set I've seen was a Zenith from around '85. The larger CRT's didn't really take off until the late '80's.
