That seems to be a common problem with this model -- both parts radios I bought had very bad hinge joints. One of them was completely separated, and was being held on with large rubber bands!
That's the main reason I chose to restore the beige one. It had the best case of the three. The hinge is starting to crack at the ends, but is still in pretty good shape:
