I think the movie you're talking about is Avalon by Barry Levinson, who also made Diner. In fact, in one scene in Avalon, the kid looks out the back window of the car to see them installing the diner from Diner.

That movie has a great scene in which the family sits enthralled by their first TV, staring at a test pattern. The grandfather finally says that to him, it doesn't have what radio has.

Yah, but he carried that Admiral in like a bag of groceries, and, didn't even connect an antenna!

I loved the scene of all the tv's on in the store.
I was heart broken after the fire when all they found was the bront panel of a GE locomotive set.
Of course, where did all the gutts go???
Nothing left of anything??
Heck, there was even more left after a blaze on another movie I liked.
This movie is just great!
