Definitely makes sense. Whether you find a great set or a person who could help, chances are they are not anywhere near you. That is the one major downside of this hobby.

Also a nice analog VOM is great to have. Even a cheap one. Great for fast continuity checks. Quick voltage checks.
I've been using a small bakelite Heathkit from 1949 for about 15 years and love it.
Nice quick responsive needle and well built.
